Tang sight tapped off center, what to do?

Post by hammerman »

Howdy all,

I don't post to much, but I have a question. On a mod 94 winchester, the marbles tang site was tapped just a little off center to the right looking at it from the back. I adjusted the windage over to get it lined up, but I'm not sure if the sight goes up straight when you adjust for farther distance. Any ideas on what to do or should it be fine? How do I check to make sure it goes up straight?

Thanks for the help. If need be, I can take a picture.

Would a piece of shim stock along one side bring it back around?

Shim the low side or file the high side. The sight has to be square with the world or the long range adjustability is useless.

When you say the "sight" was tapped off center, do you mean the sight base or the tapped hole in the tang? If the sight is off, send her back but if the hole in the tang is off, you might be able to file the hole in the sight base(v-e-r-y carefully) from side to side to get a little "windage" in the base. As Leverluver say's, if its not square, its near worthless for anything much past 150 or 200, depending on how much its off. After filing the sight base, degrease everything real well, and apply some epoxy and reset the base on the tang. Line her up the best you can and tighten her down. The human eye is amazing on getting things lined up. Just make sure you or the person doing the "lining up" does not have a bit of astigmitism.-----------Sixgun

I think I'll try shimming the sight and see how that works. Thanks for the help.

Actually, if the hole in the forward part of the tang was drilled "off-center", it will not only be off from plumb, but also the sight will sit slightly twisted or not "square" to the bore. "Shimming" the low side will put the mast in an upright position, but... your sight will still not be "square" across the centerline of the bore. To correct that, you will need to carefully enlongate the hole in the sight base on the same side where the screw hole is incorrectly positioned in relation to the centerline of the tang.

I don’t like shims. I relieve the bottom of the base on the opposite side from the canted side.

I put 4 strips of coke can on the side and it is as straight as I can get it. I think I may elongate the hole on the sight, but the sight doesn't look twisted when you look through it. I would like to still be able to use the sight on my other guns, so I really don't want to do any grinding on the sight.
