New Custom 32-20 mould

Post by KirkD »

I liked Accurate Mould's 31-112L Lyman 311316 inspired bullet for the 32-20, but I wanted a plain base version. This allowed an extra lube groove as well. I emailed Tom with my proposed modifications to his 31-112L and a few days later he replied back with a modified mould designated 31-112M. I promptly put it on my Christmas list with all the details, in case my wife decides to get it for me. If I don't see it under the tree, however, then I will be placing my order right after Christmas. Here it is ... http://www.accuratemolds.com/bullet_det ... 112M-D.png My experience with a wide variety of 32-20 bullets says that this bullet, with its two lube grooves, plain base, forward driving band, and a healthy amount of its mass between the forward driving band and the base, will be a very accurate bullet.

I have had great results with a Rapine mould, it casts a bullet that weighs between 114-116gr. It didn't hold QUITE enough lube for black powder, though, so I put a thin lube disc under the bullet, between a couple of paper wads.

It might work and probably will.

Nothing has ever outshot the twenty or so 32-20 rifles of different makes and vintages I have owned over the years than the Lyman 3118, including any jacketed bullets.----6

A few years ago, I tried a variety of cast and jacketed bullets, including the Lyman 3118, each at 100 yards. For me, the Magma cast bullet beat out the Lyman 311008. My guess is that the longer nose of the Lyman 3118 did not stabilize as well as a bullet with more of its mass at or behind the front driving band. I chose a custom mould that was similar to the Magma profile. The range will tell the story, but it will be spring before I get some casting done. Casting outdoors in this weather uses up a lot of fuel.

Kirk, I sure hope that 112 grain bullet works in the 32wcf, Maybe it'll thump groundhogs and coons like that 115 does.
I have some 500 grain cast for the 45-70 I got from my son. He shot them with black and smokeless and thought they were real accurate, I'll check the name of them. How would 5744 work with them?

Jerry, 5744 will be one of the powders I try as well as IMR4198

Kirk, just suppose an old man in Arkansaw was to load a few 500's about where would a feller start with some 5744?? I am using 18 grains of 5744 with a 405 grain cast now.

Jerry, I just looked up a target I shot a year or so ago, using original-type 500 grain bullets. I have not cast any with my new mould yet. The load I used was 24 grains of 5744 under a 500 grain SAECO 881 plain base bullet for 1,173 fps. I got a four-shot group at 100 yards of 1 & 3/4". That was what got me so excited about getting a 500 grain mould.

I'm looking forward to hearing about this mold's performance.
Kind regards,

Thank you Kirk, I'll give this a try. The rifle is an old H&R Shikari single shot. When I got it from my son I put a Williams Foolproof on it.

Do you prefer aluminum, iron, or brass molds from Accurate?

My preference is brass. Easier to maintain. I don't have to oil them or keep them in a dry place. My least favorite is aluminum. It doesn't hold the heat as we'll. brass hold the heat the best, sometimes too well so I have to let the mould cool a bit for a minute.
