"Harvested" is what a farmer does to his garden..this wasn't killed on a deer farm..it was a wild whitetail. 18 and a quarter inches wide 14 inches high..no idea of total score..eleven points..basically an eight point mainframe with three forked points over an inch..Blaine will post some photos later this morning.. That makes sense.Les Staley wrote:"Harvested" is what a farmer does to his garden..this wasn't killed on a deer farm..it was a wild whitetail.
We love to tell urban hippie types that we have an organic garden, and keep dairy goats, and have free-range chickens, and they get all excited, then we add nonchalantly, "we also raise free-range venison", and they go "Wow, man, that is really cool...", then after a few seconds say "How do you actually do that, anyway...?" You should see their little faces in shock when we say "Oh, we just own some woods, and go deer hunting every year...!"

Reckon I would have to say that a 185 yard running shot is KILLING a deer, you should be proud to say that. Here in these north Arkansas hills I can't even see a deer that far on the highway let alone in the woods.

I do not have to have a garden/farm/whatever to Harvest food.Les Staley wrote:"Harvested" is what a farmer does to his garden..this wasn't killed on a deer farm..it was a wild whitetail. 18 and a quarter inches wide 14 inches high..no idea of total score..eleven points..basically an eight point mainframe with three forked points over an inch..Blaine will post some photos later this morning.. I harvest Prickly Pears all the time. Others harvest Mushrooms... or ginger, or ginseng, or berries or trees (for consumption as lumber or firewood)... or whatever.
If you are killing for sport/trophies then you are not harvesting, but if you are going to consume whatever it is you collect from the field, either tame or wild, then it is "harvested".

I agree, I don't have to plant something to harvest it. I grew up harvesting berries, beach asparagus, seaweed, fish, shellfish, crustaceans, trees for firewood and lumber, ducks, geese, grouse, furbearing animals, and of course, deer, caribou, bear, etc.Old Ironsights wrote: I harvest Prickly Pears all the time. In fact when I need to harvest an animal like a caribou or moose, the State of Alaska gives me a harvest ticket. When you are catching animals for food, it is harvesting. When you raise animals for food, it is farming.
When I first saw the title, I thought it meant that the deer was killed, but the meat was not recovered or not used.

Dude you and I see it the exact same way !
When the animal quits breathing and the blood stomps pumping you KILLED it !
It isn't as if the corn picker drove thru and picked the ears of corn off the stalks .

Re: Killed (not harvested) a purty good whitetail today w pi
OED: Harvest:
noun
the process or period of gathering in crops: helping with the harvest
the season’s yield or crop: a poor harvest
a quantity of animals caught or killed for human use: a limited harvest of wild mink
the product or result of an action: in terms of science, Apollo yielded a meager harvest
verb [with object]
gather (a crop) as a harvest: (as noun harvesting) after harvesting, most of the crop is stored in large buildings
catch or kill (animals) for human consumption or use.
remove (cells, tissue, or an organ) from a person or animal for transplantation or experimental purposes.
collect or obtain (a resource) for future use: the research teams are leading the way in identifying new ways of harvesting the sun’s energy
There is nothing "politically correct" about using the term "harvest". Personally I use the term SHOT because it is more precise.
If I say I "killed" a deer it is most likely to have been with my Truck.

I agree again. The use of the word harvest is not a PC thing - read old books and you will find it used this way often. You can say you shot, killed, harvested, or as people often say up here, caught your deer and it all means the same thing as long as you are not a head-hunter and use the meat.BlaineG wrote: These are some CRHs we're splitting....
On the other hand, I grew up in a true subsistence lifestyle, so I have found that I look at things slightly differently than most people do.
That is going to make a nice looking mount - I like the antlers - a little different configuration than most whitetails I have seen, but I am no expert on whitetails.

Nice buck, should be a nice mount indeed.
As far as harvested goes it really is a fairly new term for hunters. I don't use it. I shot my game animals. My family elders did a lot of harvesting but they shot and killed deer and moose. Never heard a cattleman say he harvested a steer for the family, he butchered one was common enough, and I knew a bunch of old cowboys. The verbs were hunt, shot, or killed. In fact I considered it a strange term when I ran into it in American magazines at first. There is nothing wrong with the term and to each there own.
Personally, you can harvest moose or kill moose if you want. Nothing we name anything will change the no hunting crowd except hunger. However there is something serious and profound about taking a life. I do put a higher value on some creatures being fondest of the warm blooded varieties. I'm a serial killer of cancer cells and mosquitos don't count at all. I harvest carrots and kill chickens regardless what the dictionary says.

Thanks guys..this is prolly the best whitetail I've taken..started shooting deer in 1961 and have the horns if my first deer (my brother found them in the old woodshed in Michigan and put them on a plaque for me..the 1961 Michigan metal seal was still on the horns). These Idaho panhandle bucks don't see much sun..spend their lives in black mountain timber...horns stay pretty dark...come out to chase does for a couple of days..pretty lucky to see one..bout a mile up the gulch from the St Joe river..happy to be able to share these pix..

Canuck Bob you put it like I feel, at 75 years I really don't feel anybody has the right to tell me I did not KILL a deer that I shot with my rifle. The big doe I put in the freezer sure was not Harvested by a harvesting combine like a field of corn or wheat. Nuff said on this I reckon.

You're supposed to explain that you only harvested an animal was was going downhill. With your merciful harvest, you only prevented the animals suffering.
