Harvested a deer with my 86

Post by jjh501 »

Took my 86 Winnie (DOB 1887) 45-90 out to the deer woods yesterday afternoon. A six point came out late about 70 yards away. He was facing me and never turned broadside. When he lowered his head to graze I shot hime at the base of the neck. He was DRT. I was using a 300 grain gas check bullet and 30 grains of Accurate Arms 5744 and I was amazed at the penetration. The bullet pulverized 2 vertebrae then went completely through the chest and abdominal cavity finally fracturing the left femur. Put it another way, I shattered its femur by shooting it in the neck.
Sorry, no pictures this time. I think venison will be part of Thanksgiving Dinner this year.

Now that's a good clean and humane kill. No adrenalin in the meat and if he was eating a lot of green grass I bet he will taste particularly great. Nice work. -Tutt

Wow! The penetration of that round is very good. Congratulations on harvesting a deer with a classic Winchester.

Sounds like you did OK. I sure do like that 5744 powder, use it for 38-55 and 32-20.

It would have been deader if you used one of them new-fangled super-short belted-magnum hyper-velocity rounds with a titanium-cored, H-framed, swaged-core, welded-jacket, laser-guided, computer-balanced bullet, fired from a respectable bolt-action that was of a far more modern design...providing you used a tactical scope with an illuminated reticle that had built-in ballistic aiming points customized to your cartridge...

Sounds about like what I've been huntin' with. 'Cept mine was made in '16 and I use a tad more 5744. Don't you just love it?
