.44 MAG/SPECIAL/COLT

Post by 1988rrc »

at the gun store today i was looking for some 44 specials to shoot in my .44 mag. i ran across a box of .44 Colt cartridges that was sitting with the .44-40 boxes. i asked the sales clerk what is a .44 Colt; he didn't know either.

after looking it up on the web, am i correct, the .44 Colt is a shorter .44 special? if so, can it be shot in a .44 mag?

But it may not work in the 44 mag rifles, particularly the 92's. The rim dia. is smaller.

IIRC, the original 44 Colt was an outside lubricated round. Think .22 Long Rifle on steriods. Many of the cartridges of the day were this way. "Modern" 44 Colts are indeed simply ".44 Special Specials" - shorter versions. Any revolver capable of shooting a .44 Magnum and/or .44 Special can fire the .44 Colt. No promises on acuracy though! The 44 Colt's are being used in some of the reproduction cartridge conversions, so there is some modern demand for them.

Nate Kiowa Jones is 100% correct, as usual. The cartridge my not feed 100% in leverguns. No real reason to use them in one except in a pinch, or if it is a companion to a revolver.

What were they asking for them?
