I traded some 223 ammo for this yesterday. Really dont know much about springfields but its gonna be fun researching it. Its a 1873 Springfield 45-70. It has a 4 digit serial number starting with 3. ImageImageImageImageImageImage

Put a "carriage return" in there after each picture so we don't have to do the "scrolling" over thing, and each picture is distinct.

Agreed good trade!
One thing for certain to me is that barrel has been shortened... My guess is it's a shortened rifle..Don't know why anyone would shorten a carbine... Look at the end of the stock forward of the barrel band to see if the cleaning rod channel has been filled in, that would be a dead giveaway it's a shortened rifle...
One of the best shooting guns I ever had the pleasure to play with was a trapdoor rifle cut down to carbine length... stock was fuuugly with plastic filler all over the place, but she shot great with cast bullets with mild loads.. what fun to off hand shoot it and bounce cans all over at a hunnert... hope yours works out the same :)

Yes the barrel has been shortened. It's cut flat without a crown. I'm still learning on the picture posting I have trouble with photobucket.
