Re: Please Have A Thought About My Drinking....
I wouldn't worry about it too much; sometimes things can just get away from you. The last time I got drunk was about six years ago, I was at home, watching Gettysburg on the 4th of July weekend. It was a nice night, screen doors were open, I was playing along with the soundtrack, and swilling beers. After the weekend's supply was gone I walked to the corner store and got more. I paid the next day in queasiness but since it was "just one of those things" I'm not worried. Normally I drink a big can of Foster's once a week, and about half a shot of whiskey twice a week. If your daily/weekly take is reasonable, don't worry about an occasional big night, it sounds like it happened for the right reasons.
On the other hand, you are getting older, in fact you've BEEN getting older, so act your age, please.

Maybe start something new.
I started this three weeks ago and feel great. Better than I have in a long time.
If you do decide to do it, Vitacost has cheap MCT oil ( start with just a half teaspoon or so). And remember that butter is just churned cream. I roast my own beans so I never tried his, but would if my beans were suspect.
The whole concept of cyclical ketogenics and intermittent fasting intrigues me. I like it. Sure has cut down on my drinking. Only once a week now for me.
FWIW, my periods of abusive drinking occurred when I was bored. I would not have been able to put that fine point on it then, but in 20/20 hindsight that's exactly what it was.

Re: Please Have A Thought About My Drinking....
Addiction of any type is always a tough one. The first thing, as you have done, is to reach out and talk about it. Good for you. Try and take a negative and turn it into a positive somehow. Refocus your thoughts onto other interests to occupy your time. If you stick with something that takes up your time and thoughts maybe just maybe....
Re: Please Have A Thought About My Drinking....
Will be praying for ya Blaine that thing stay on a even plain.
I quit drinking for 20 years until recently and have been to town a few times which isn`t generally a good thing as i am not a very good communicator and people rub me the wrong way.
If your heart is telling you there is something wrong there probably is.

Nope, TTT - if there's a problem, "a couple" is not "OK".BlaineG wrote:

BT, DT - although by no means easy, abstination seems to be the best policy, IMHO.
What works for me, is not placing myself somewhere I might be tempted - which means foregoing visiting certain locations/events.
Retirement can be hard on some, leading to boredom/laziness, or rejection (feeling not needed anymore) - so you might need to buy a new gun to soothe yerself. . .
I'm hopin' & prayin' you work it out.

Re: Please Have A Thought About My Drinking....
Uggghhh....... the beer is one of my Achilles' heels in life. I have been counter-acting it for years with exercise levels that border on the absurd, but now that I have a lot going on in my life, I often don't have 2-3 hours a day for training. But I can find the time to drink a few beers every other night,
Last night was a big night, sports wise, if you had a couple too many pops while watching the Spurs/Heat game and chatting up some ladies , then your probably in good company -- most of the sports watching population either did that, or aspired to
----- if that type of activity happens on the reg though, all I can add is perhaps try to channel potentially self destructive habits into positive ones? Easier said than done I know. To me, having a cool one (or 6) seems a lot more satisfying after I've worked up a good sweat outside.

Re: Please Have A Thought About My Drinking....
My prayers are with you Blain, but for guys that have our affliction (disease), one is too many, and a thousand ain't enough. Since I'm anonymous here I guess it's ok to tell you to find an AA meeting. You may have to look around at more than one or two, but you'll surely find a meeting with a bunch of bike riding, gun toting drunks...
I drank waaaaay too much for 39 years and although I tried everything from psychology to church, meditation to anabuse, I couldn't get sober 'till I went to AA and decided to put as much effort in staying sober as I put in finding a drink. I wasn't a falling down drunk, but I was "under the influence" 24-7. I was gainfully employed for 95% of my adult life (50+ years), so on the outside, I looked fine. We aren't bad, irresponsible, mean, sloppy, or weak folk, jes different than most...

You're the best judge of whether or not there's a real problem that needs addressing, but if this is a once in a long while thing, I'd be tempted to say that you're making to much of it.
When my son was a fry, there was a time when he tried to pretend he stuttered. I suppose it was so that he could either get some attention or have something to make him feel special.
I told him to "Knock that chit off. There are better ways to get a better quality of attention if you need it."
He dropped the act and stopped stuttering.
Not saying that's you, just telling the story to flesh out a thought.
Don't fall into the modern trap of making yourself some kind of victim or member of an oppressed minority. I mean, unless you really need the entertainment.

Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

Re: Please Have A Thought About My Drinking....
Don't forget that AA has done lots of good for lots of people. I have many patients who stay 'dry' purely due to the support they get there from people who've "been there done that". Went to a meeting with a relative once and was welcome even as an 'outsider' (not all meetings are 'open' ones), and the conversation there was as inspirational as any church service I've attended, and as intellectual as any medical school lecture I've attended.
Prayers up.

Re: Please Have A Thought About My Drinking....
You're a smart guy and what you did last night was very smart and brave. No need to apologize for being brave and smart.
I experienced a kind of grieving when my career ended. It's lasted about 10 years so far. Maybe the change of a life long routine is tougher to deal with than we know.
I am going to get into a little small scale blacksmithing to keep my hands and mind busier. Because I really really suck at electric bass. And there is something therapeutic about smacking and reshaping hot steel.
I don't think of my guns and their care as a hobby, more like maintenance and life support, like keeping a tractor running. They are primarily my tools for feeding the hungry in the compound.
Hope that makes some sort of sense.

Jeepnik.yeah you're right.
Re: Please Have A Thought About My Drinking....
Blaine, (no joking here)
I can make it simple for 'ya. You either have the gene that gives you the desire to drink or you don't have the gene. People who do not have the gene can drink when they feel like it, put it down, and then go about their business, not thinking about getting a future buzz.
People who have the gene think about it all the time. They have to control it. People who have this gene have varying degrees of control. It does not matter what degree of control they have, they are all drunks. Most anything, large or small can trigger these people to drink.
There's only one way for an individual who has the gene to cure himself. He/she has to abstain 100% from drinking. After a couple of weeks, it gets better. A couple of months later, you feel real good. A year later, you feel brand new as the memory of what it was like to be high fades so far away, you think its in outer space.
No one in my family has this gene.................except me. Been there, done that, back and forth, forth and back. All through my twenties and thirties, I'd stop from time to time and then start back up when something annoyed me or if I just wanted to celebrate life in a joyful way. When I hit 40 (18 years ago) I finally saw the light and gave it up for good.
Its a call each individual has to make for himself. You don't need any help......just quit and go about your business. In time, the memory will be far away.--------------------------Sixgun

++!! everything everybody else said
Boy did I love my Whiskey... still miss it...Thing I learned was after laying off drink for several months and then having a few good gulps of my favorite...It doesn't taste as good ...Conclusion: I have to keep in "condition " for it to taste right , unfortunately that means ever increasing amounts to stay "conditioned" Where's the fun in that?
My positive thoughts for you that I'm sure you already know... If you done it once...You can by God do it again one minute at a time if need be..

Re: Please Have A Thought About My Drinking....
Blaine, you are one lucky dude and I mean that! You have a drinking problem and the only disease you can cure by making a choice. I'm not saying it's easy at all. Man up. Make the hard choice to stop drinking. Not tomorrow...not with excuses of only a few more...but stop right now with the bottle of beer half full in front of you. It's just that simple...and hard...but you know how lucky your are. You could have incurable cancer and be screwed. So what are you going to do?
You are in my thoughts and prayers to do what you need to do...cure yourself...and give thanks that you can have your life back, and you don't have a disease like cancer.

Re: Please Have A Thought About My Drinking....
Blain,
I do not know if you are a believer (in Jesus) or not but my prayers are offered up for you to the Father through his Son Jesus.
First: For your salvation in that you would come to know Jesus if you already haven't since he said that 'no one comes to the Father except through me.'
Second: For your sobriety. We are ALL sinners if we are truthful with ourselves. (If you don't think so, well that's another story).
If someone is 'saved' he has accepted what Christ did for us by dying on the cross and has been forgiven for whatever sin's one might commit. This is true as long as one is sincere and not trying to play God - I think you get the message.
Therefore, if you believe and want to stop the alcohol, please ask the Father in Jesus's name to take it off of you and he will do so. It might take take one day or it might take many, but he WILL take it off of you. Like I told someone else in another unrelated posting, God will not lose any of his own.

Or like I tell folks, "Don't believe ME. I'm not trying to convince you of anything. Believe yourself after you truly surrender to Him and discover that you are a changed man...." Born again in fact.UncleBuck wrote:Blain,

I have confidence that between his self-awareness and our prayers, Blaine will be just fine. Which is good because he needs to ride his bike or drive his crazy new wagon down to Tucson for some shooting and airplane lookin' at.

It Tastes good.. It feels great. Then a guy starts talking up stuff that is so embarrassing when you've finally sobered up...I been there myself a bunch of times.. Some folks handle it well and others should never touch the stuff.

'Doing stuff instead of sitting around' is a good plan, Blaine. Keep heading in that direction. We all need support and encouragement from time to time.BlaineG wrote:Yup, and Yup on all accounts.....I better start getting out and doing stuff instead of sitting around and then heading out to the Inn......I appreciate all the support, and sorry I "Pelosied" all over the forum last night....

The drinking road is a hard one to go down. It seems people who like to drink finally have to stop. If it is giving you a hard time just stop drinking for a year. If that seems like it would be impossible that is a bad sign. I quit drinking 20 years ago and don't miss it. The fire will go out if you don't feed it.
I like whiskey. I always did, and that is why I never drink it.

FWIW; AA is the single most successful program, ever, dealing with alcoholism. AA's twelve steps have been adopted by hundreds of groups to deal with an obsessive-compulsive problem, from over eaters to sex addicts...AJMD429 wrote:Don't forget that AA has done lots of good for lots of people.
Prayers up.

AA saved my rump plain and simple. Your doing the right thing by checking things out and keeping a sharp eye on your self. It takes a real man to have the courage to do that.
