45/60 loads

I've bought a Chaperral 76 in .45/60. I don't load 5744 at all. I do have a lot of 2400 and H4895. I've been loading since 1976 I bought my first .45/70 a Ruger #1 which was a lot of fun to shoot. I wish I didn't sell it. But I wanted a Sharps 74 which I obtained in 79 in .50/90. So I would like to know if I could use the loads in a trapdoor .45/70 for the .45/60. Ive been over at the CAS forum but did not see any loads other than 5744 and 4198.

I used to have a 45-60 and tried different powders. 5744 was the best as it was not as position sensitive as some others. I think H4895 is better to use than 2400, as it will fill the case better, giving more consistent burning and velocities. I find 2400 gives pretty large extreme spreads in velocity. I would use H4895 and start with 35 grains under a 300 grain bullet and fire it over a chronograph, then add more powder until I got 1,300 fps. At 1,300 fps with a 300 grain bullet, you will have a peak pressure that is less than FFg black powder so you'll be safe.
