New Guide Gun

Post by Scoutmaster »

I picked up a new Marlin 1895G Guide Gun in 45/70 on Thursday. I had bought a Pachmayr pre-fit recoil pad for it and guess what? It didn't fit. Well I'm never happy with the stock finish, so within two hours of getting it home I slathered it with Citri-Strip and stripped off the finish. Once I got it cleaned up I started applying a thinned out Tru-oil and kept adding more Tru-Oil for the first 12 coats. Then it got another 3 coats of pure Tru-Oil. I fit the new recoil pad to it and installed the scope in the Dednutz mount. I then decided that I liked it better with a XS ghost ring sight set, so I took the scope back off and the rifle felt much better. But I shoot much better with a scope and the scope works better in low light, so I put it back on again. DUH!!!!!! It must be a late mid-life thingy. ::)
Okay so the scope is on, the finish is done and the recoil pad now fits, so nothing left to do(for now) but post some photos!

Rusty,
This is my third Dednutz scope mount. I have two Tikka rifles that wear them and I liked them so much I had to get one for this rifle. They are as solid of a mount as I've ever seen.

Andy,
That is a Leupold M8-3X. They haven't made them for some time now. I actually got it about six years ago for free. It came on a Marlin 444 that I bought. I kept the scope and sold the rifle for the same price I paid for both. What a deal!

Gary,
My photography skills are lacking. I had a light on the left side of the rifle so the wood on the butt stock shows up lighter than the forearm, but they are both the same, unstained walnut. Although Tru-Oil does have some color to it.

Nice, a rifle without a scope, is like a horse without a saddle.
