The 30-30 loads I roll use a 2.2cc scoop of Reloader 15 (which is in the neighborhood of 31 grains) and a 170 grain bullet with a large rifle primer. Right now I have plenty of regular large rifle primers, but as you know primers are getting tough to find and so when I found a couple hundred large rifle magnum primers at the local toy store I bought them. Now, I have heard conflicting opinions as to whether it is okay to use magnums in place of large rifle. Is it safe or not?
Secondly, in the near future I am wanting to start loading cast bullets because they can be had so much cheaper. Any favorite loads yall have? Is a gas check always needed? And, .308 or .309 or .310?
As always, I appreciate the answers yall always have for me even when I ask a very elementary question.

Change primers, make, type, whatever, and you have changed the load. It is BEST to start over and work back up. Put them aside and wait and see. You might be able to trade them for your brand of standard LR primers, a better choice.

What Hobie said. Those will work but you're liking going to have to rework your load to get the same accuracy etc.
Do you're pricing carefully on the cast bullets, casting your own isn't as cheap as it once was, and it's not uncommon to get bulk Remington and Winchester bulk bullets cheaper than you can buy cast. Also do the math on a box of gaschecks if you lean towards a gc bullet, those aren't cheap anymore either.
5744,sr4759,4198 are all good cast bullet powders.

Re: Using Magnum Primers in Lieu of Large Rifle
As I mentioned in the other primer thread, Precision Reloading (online) has Federal 210's (LR) in stock at the moment if you're looking to put away a large quantity or if Federal happens to be your go-to brand.

Okay, thanks guys. I'll wait and use them when I have my scale and can work up a load with them as was suggested. And, as a matter of fact Federal 210's are the primers I use. I may just have to order some more before they dry up now that I know where they are at.

As a side note, the magnum primers I bought were Winchester.

Re: Using Magnum Primers in Lieu of Large Rifle
on cast boolits, the use of a gas check is needed over 1400 fps. i cast my own for my 30-30 and size at .311. you need to be at .001 to .002 over bore diameter for cast to be accurate and not lead your barrel.
