Photos of my "new" Browning and an H&R 45-70 I got Sat.

Post by 2ndovc »

First the "new" 1895. Not great photos, it was cold and blowing like snot outside!

Picked it up last week for $480, it was dirty, covered in some residue and had what looked like a long scratch @ 18" along the barrel. Well a good cleaning was all it needed and the scratch turned out to be white paint! The stock has some small dings and dents so I'm going to strip off that glossy Browning finish and redo the wood.
So far I'm thrilled with it. Can't wait to shoot it. I'm thinking of one of the Providence Tool repro Lyman 21 rec. sight but the buckhorn sight that's on it seems to be dead on.

Anyway...

Had a table at the Maumee (Ohio) gun collectors association show yesterday. What a zoo, the line to get in was 100-300 yards long until about noon! Not an AR in the place under $1800, most were $2k+. M1a's $2600 and an H&K 91 sold for $5k with a plié of mags and some other things.
I sold a NIB Mini-14 with one spare aftermarket mag for $1300! and that old Russian Berdan for twice what I paid for it. Looked all day for something good but nothing I wanted. Finally spotted an H&R ShiKari Handi Rifle in .45-70 with a
$150 tag on it. Offered $120 for it and off I we went.
Well got it apart this morning to clean it and found out why so cheap.
The lug that the fore end screws into was broken off. Looks like some 'billy tried to solder it back on but it snapped right off when I tried to unscrew it.
Going to call tomorrow about getting it fixed, really like the little bugger. First time in years I've been taken. Oh well, I'm sure I can get it fixed somewhere.

Problem.

Anyway, had a good run last couple months so can't complain to much. :D

Worth the $120 and easily fixable.

Was that silver soldered on, or was it welded? If it's the first, no big deal. If it's the second, anyone reasonable good with a TIG could make that as good as new with minor effort.

You did all right. I love the looks of that 1895.

Now that 1895 is BEAUTIFUL...!!! Makes me want one...

As far as the H&R, the biggest concern I'd have is making sure you don't soften the barrel-steel when re-attaching the forarm stud. If it's not the original 'factory' job I'd even consider rebarreling it in case the previous owner did some bad weld-job.

it was just soldered back on, not welded. There's a factory repair guy here in Ohio, I'm going to call them tomorrow.

I'm also going to ask if they can do something with the trigger, It's gotta be 10#s!! :D

Looks to me like you got a good deal on both accounts. If it costs you $50 to have it fixed it will still be in the ballpark for the ones I see for sale.

Cause it ain't broke!
But I'm really jazzed about the '06!
It's one of the early ones, no safety or rebounding hammer.
After I got all the snot out of the action it's the smoothest '95 I have. Really looks nice next to my Russian Musket, .35WCF and '06 SRC! Still looking for a .303 Brit. but that's been my Holy Grail. When I find one I have $50 in my pocket, when I have $2k there's not one in sight!

Wow - $480 for a nice 95 like that? What a deal! And the H&R will be an easy fix. You did great!

A good Master Welder can TIG weld that back on with out distorting or changing the temper of the barrel.

My grandson is a master welder and has his own weld rigs at his home.
The last work he did for me was weld the safety notch closed on my 1851 Navy C&B Hammers. This is a modification we do to the C&B Colt style revolver's. This keep the hammer face from attaching the fired cap, and on cocking droping the fired spent cap in the hammer slot of the frame.
The hammer is hardened CC steel, he uses just enough amperage to get the job done, with out changing the temper of the hammer. Then I file and stone the face of the hammer, square to the World. My file will hardly touch that Hammer face once I get the dop of weld filed down.
Ya done good on the price for the Handi, have fun shooting that piece.

Get that H&R fixed and shoot it. I have one just like it with a Williams Foolproof on it and it is a joy to shoot with 5744 and 405 cast, very accurate. Got the load from Kirk.

That Shikari is still worth the $120 that you paid. $480 for the model 95!!! .30-06 and .303 British are the two calibers that I would most want chambered in that rifle. Good for you!
