1886 pistol grip conversion

Post by Aggiecubpilot »

Does anyone know if a Miroku 71 stock, lower tang, and lever could be fitted up to an 86? I'm assuming that the upper tang is the same dimensions on both. I really like my extra light and I love 45-70, and I'd love to have a 71 but I can't justify loading the 348. Any thoughts?

Thanks! Good shooting to all!

Cant help much, but I have a Winchester 71 that I want to straight grip. If you find the parts, I'd be interested in your straight grip lever, and may trade mine. My tang, I need, I'll just grind it straight. It fits my stock, and is straight under the pistol grip curve.

Actually, no, the upper tangs arent the same. 86's have a longer tang, meaning a 71 stock could be inletted to fit it, but an 86 stock wouldnt fit a 71. The lower tangs are shorter also, but could also be inletted to work, but if you're using the 86 reciever, and 71 lower, you'll have to drill and tap the tang screw hole in the lower, as its farther back in the 86. Not sure if the 71 lower is long enough to do that with though. Haven't had them apart side by side.

It may be simpler to buy a 71 already made up as a 45-70 There's a fair number of older Winchester 71's so done), or rebarrel one. It would probably just be easiest yet to get dies and brass for the 71 and shoot it as is. It's a good round.
