My Other Summer Project: ‘Fire Piston’
Though not as cool & elaborate as the things our good friend Pitchster makes
I had fun making it, and thought you guys would find it interesting as well
And heck it even works
I used this youtube video for reference.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-djD2n2YSv0
An old gutted and glass beaded-(exterior) MAGLITE.
Piston in storage position in the tube.
Char-cloth & jute fire starter string in the lamp head storage area.
Char-cloth cup.
Char-cloth cup loaded.
Ready for the power stroke.
Char-cloth lit.
without flash.
Ready to make fire.
Fire.
What I used for piston lubrication.

Well just for your information i`ve tried making them and failed big time so thereThough not as cool & elaborate as the things our good friend Pitchster makes
How can ya get any cooler than the one you made and it works perfect.

Re: My Other Summer Project: ‘Fire Piston’
How does it work...? Is it just rapid compression causing heat...? Amazing, whatever the case...!

I hate you.
I have 2 different types but never thought to use one of my extra Maglights as a frame...
Grrrr,,,, You have defeated me grasshopper...
AJ: They work on the diesel principle (only Mr. Diesel "discovered" it about 1000 years after some caveman...). Rapidly compressed air produces enough heat to create combustion. Add a substrate that will take that heat and maintain it as an ember that you can put into tinder and you have a firestarter.

Yes compression, just like a diesel engine works.AJMD429 wrote:How does it work...? Is it just rapid compression causing heat...? Amazing, whatever the case...!

One stroke by hand? More than one or use a mallet?

Re: My Other Summer Project: ‘Fire Piston’
That is cool and you did it using commonly available materials.
I have turned them out of wood and used an O-ring to seal the piston but yours is just cool.

it doing a fire compression. Yes sometimes it takes
more than one try. Never had to do more than 3
strokes to get it to light a piece of char cloth.

I've seen some really cool ones made out of clear acrylic. You can see the tinder flash when you whack it.

Cool ideaOld Ironsights wrote:I've seen some really cool ones made out of clear acrylic. You can see the tinder flash when you whack it.
I'm thinking about making another one using the little
single AAA battery MagLit. I'm wondering just how small
you can go till there's not enough power stroke travel to
generate the required pressure.

right now cracking one of these out on a grand deluxe
scale using an engine piston

Re: My Other Summer Project: ‘Fire Piston’
I've been wanting to try my hand at making one of those. The Mag Lite idea is just cool. Everything you need in a sturdy waterproof container. I think I may have an old Mag Lite laying around somewhere......
"If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace. We seek not your counsel, nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you; and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen" - Samuel Adams
Re: My Other Summer Project: ‘Fire Piston’
A warning about these things, be sure the container ya use is strong enough to handle the pressure.
I was putting a piece of tissue in a veterinarian syringe and slamming it and watching it light. Dern thing blew up like a fire cracker and shrapnel went everywhere.
So be careful gents.

To add to Pitchy's good safety warning.Pitchy wrote:A warning about these things, be sure the container ya use is strong enough to handle the pressure.

You really do 'NOT' need to slam a fire piston.
Nor do you need a sledgehammer, mallet, or hammer of any kind.
If the fire piston is made right & you’re using good char cloth it
should fire with little difficulty.
1. Insert the char cloth loaded piston into the cylinder just to the point
it starts to get tight with compression.
2. I use a two-hand hold on the cylinder with the end cap of the cylinder
firm against the bony part of the palm of my hand.
3. put the end of the (dowel rod) piston against something very firm that
isn’t going to move, such as a tree trunk or a large rock.
4. All that’s left is a good hard very sharp “body into it” shove with the
palm of the hand that is against the end cap of the cylinder.
All your really striving for is to hit that magic pressure value to generate
the required heat to fire the char cloth.
O and one other thing, have the tip of a knife on the ready to dig the lit
char cloth out of the piston cup. Char cloth burns very hot. ‘don’t ask’

those 'can I do it & will it work' projects. You're more than
welcome to have this one to play around with. I know you do
over night hiking trips. Be kinda cool to see how it would work
out in real world fire starting situations.

Re: My Other Summer Project: ‘Fire Piston’
Here's my two pistons.
Both were bought off the internet several years ago.
The left one is polished Ironwood inside & out. The Right one is hardwood of sometype but does away with the hassle of polishing the piston chamber by using brass tube.
Both work OK, but I'm going to have to try the Maglight mod. I'd think the thicker piston would be harder to break and you get a bigger coal...

Looks like ya have a couple maglite's there ready
to gut and get to it

Hey buddy, what did you use for the piston seal?
I have one of those small mag lights, give me some directions if you would be so kind.

Kwl Mike. My son and I would love to see it and give it a try.

Instead of carefully cutting a grove into the dowel rod and using anPitchy wrote:Hey buddy, what did you use for the piston seal?

O-ring, I used an oversized faucet seat with a brass cup epoxied in the
center then screwed and epoxied to the end of the dowel rod.
I then chucked the dowel rod into the drill press and lightly
sanded the seat down till it was just a snug fit to the cylinder bore.
And make sure you fill the end cap hollow flush with epoxy and
epoxy the threads so it has a perfect airtight seal and never comes
loose.

If you look closely at my two units, they basically demonstrate both ideas.casastahle wrote:Instead of carefully cutting a grove into the dowel rod and using anPitchy wrote:Hey buddy, what did you use for the piston seal?

The Left one uses 2 Orings and the char fits into a carved out hollow in the piston.
The Right one uses a small rubber cup that is held onto the piston by a brass brad.
The Oring version is far more efficient, but harder to make.
