New airgun rifle and pistol

Post by 86er »

Took the boys to visit grandma and papa. My Dad says "hey I have this old air pistol that I used to use". There was an Olympic support team that shot sponsored matches and the money raised was used for the US Shooting Team. Dad used a Daisy-Avanti 717 single shot, side-cocking 4.5mm pistol for the 10 meter freehand. I chronographed Bulldog 8.8 grain pellet and they do 354 fps average and will group into 1/2" if I shoot very carefully at 10 yds. With that, Uncle Jerry (actually my Mom's brother) says "I have these air rifles still in the boxes". He assisted with the design of the safety mechanism when the company was looking for a US Importer in the late 70's. These 3 rifles were new in the unopened box from 1978. My boys got one from him. It is a Haenel Model 303 4.5 mm single shot break open rifle. I chronographed 646 fps average with a RWS flat point match 7.3 grain pellet. It groups 10 shots into .85 inch at 10 meters (3 groups averaged). It's a neat old rifle even though this one is brand new. We have over 10,000 pellets to burn up ... well about 9,150 of them now!

Very nice. By the way, grasshoppers make good targets as long as they are on the ground.

I love my 717 standard model... massaged the trigger a bit when I first got it.. I've hit kelp flies with it at ten feet... Shoot miniature silhouettes with it too... Once she got the hang of it, wifey who is a south paw almost always bests me at the game with it and that's using it in her left hand with the right handed grips!
