I truly thought the "Why can't they just leave it alone" thread was about this! This is either very intruguing - or frightening! I welcome just about any western these days though, as long as it's well done. I like Damon well enough and think he'll do ok, just hope the other doesn't make it into a circus.

I've yet to see a modern remake of any Western I could stomach and doubt this would be any different. As for Matt Damon the "actor" (not to be confused with the liberal puke) I think he's OK but as Vin? Think not. As for Tom Cruise...... he pretty much stinks all the way around and I won't watch a movie he's in. Not for political or religious reasons...... He is just an arrogant crappy actor.

Go back a couple years and this thread could been titled "True Grit remake being cast."
Turns out the remake of True Grit was pretty decent.

Actors are just like everyone else. Some are pretty good, some stink. Tom Cruise makes me wanna puke too. The only saving grace to his movies is they usually cast good looking gals as costars.

True Grit was different. They got Jeff Bridges to try to fill John Wayne's shoes. In my opinion, he didn't, but did a respectable job of trying. Bridges was also a lot easier for most folks like us to deal with, because he hasn't made a reputation of going around spouting off about liberal and socialist causes. Big difference from the idiot Matt Damon.

One of the things that way too many of today's actors don't get is the concept of "the suspension of disbelief." Heck, we learned about this in junior high school. But these overpaid idiots today evidently never did. The whole idea is that a reader (book) or viewer (film) should be able to literally suspend disbelief that the story being presented is not real, and then enjoy the ride.

How you do that when you've got some preachy little socialist idiot, who you've seen countless times on national news going on about their favorite socialist causes, or their favorite socialist dictators ? ... Well, I can't "suspend disbelief" when a whole lot of these clowns are on a screen. Fools like sean penn, george clooney, or the despicable alec baldwin completely ruin a movie for me, just by playing a role. And I won't buy tickets to their films.

This "remake" could be good if they had some guts and went with new faces or relative unknowns. With the little twit damon in there, they've assured themselves that I'm not going to pay to see it, nor will many others. Hey, they're free to do what they want. I liked both the John Wayne and the latest versions of True Grit but the latest was better. Life was not so good and it made that clear.

About all the movies they make now are a remake of something.

I enjoyed both versions of True Grit but viewed them as 2 very separate movies. I that new gal in the newer True Grit did a much better job than Kim Darby in the original, never a fan of Kim Darby.

The Magnificent Seven is actually based on Akira Kurasawa's Seven Samurai which is an excellent movie. Thank goodness they never tried to do a remake of that classic.
I don't believe any of today's actors are even close the caliber of the cast of the original Magnificent Seven. Hollywood will never be as good. Hollywood should leave well enough alone in honor of these great actors who shall never be matched.

Matt Damon keeps it up, and he'll make my personal "I'll never watch one of their movie lists". Hanoi Jane is on the list, along with Sean Penn, Alec Baldwin and George Clooney (as you note). We could probably fill 100 slots easy given all the ungrateful America-hating turd-for-brains occupying Hollyweird today...

Mattie and LeBoeuf were better-cast and -acted, but hearing Jeff Bridges direct-quote John Wayne lines with marbles in his mouth was distracting.

There are a couple of remakes I like, Thomas Crowne and The Italian Job, but for the most part, Hollywood screws up remakes, trying to replace story with cgi and sociopolitical commentary (/indoctrination/ control).
The original King Kong is still the best.

+1 I really like Bridges and enjoyed his portrayal generally, but it was almost like he was trying too hard so as to not be "accused" of copying John Wayne's mannerisms and persona verbatim--since he knew he'd be under the microscope on this one--and wanted to establish his signature on this, his own crotchety Rooster Cogburn. However, in doing that he ended up pretty mumbly--overdone. Mattie was a major improvement, and fan that I was of Campbell's music (and sad to see his decline in health now), it wasn't hard to improve upon his performance! (By his own admission)

A Rice Crispy Treat is what it is.. Perfect as originally made and can't be improved upon... Put chocolate frosting on it and it AINT the same thing... It has become diluted!
