On a 71 with a recoil pad, how can you tell if some of the stock has been removed? Is there a distance from a given point to the end of the wood?

length of pull

Post by 1886 »

It is called length of pull I believe. There are many on this forum more knowledgeable than I but if I had to guess I would say 13 1/2". This length seems to be standard in the industry. 1886.

If you need a measurement, let us know, I'll be happy to measure it for you. Long tang or short tang? No doubt the same for both, but we might as well measure the same type you're looking at.
Now listen boy, I'm tryin' to teach you somethin'. That ain't an optical illusion, it only LOOKS LIKE an optical illusion.

It's a short tang. Exactly where is the measurement taken from?
Thanks

There doesn't seem to be a good place at the front of the wood to measure from. But, from the front face of the trigger the measurement looks like just about exactly 13 inches. That's from the deepest point in the trigger curve, about halfway up the trigger.

Hey 1886 - good to see another NH levergunner aboard. Kevin_in_NH and I are planning to get together for some shooting sometime before hunting season. If you might be interested, shoot me an email at oldnavyetc@hotmail.com

Hey, an even easier way to tell without a measurement would be to look for the little inlet cut at the top of the buttstock for the small projection from the top of the M71 buttplate. It goes into the buttstock just about 1/4". Seems to me they'd have to cut that much off the stock before mounting the recoil pad, or that open cutout at the top of the stock would look like hell.
