I just happened on a nice old Remington Model 8 in .35 Rem, complete with peep, for just over $300 at a pawn shop. The bore is nearly excellent, and the four-digit serial number shows it was manufactured during the last year of Theodore Roosevelt's presidency.
Now I know an autoloader ain't no "leever gun" but when it was designed by the same feller who came up with the 1886, 92 and 94, it's still mighty special.
And the peep on this danged thing is so far back that it's a perfect "ghost ring."
It's a happy day.
Very nice and just for your info that Lyman Peep on the rear is worth at least $125. They are neat old rifles and I once had quite a collection of them.

Good find, Bill: anything that goes back to old T.R's time has to be way cool. Looks well taken care of, with just enough wear to show character. And is that the 180 grain Hornady you've got tipping those shells?

Don: I've seen them with the hard rubber butt as well as the steel crescent plate. I'd rather have the hard rubber in .35, and the crescent butt in .25!
Earl: Those are Hornady factory loads (the horror!) with the new 200-grain gummy tips. I went to buy brass, bullets and dies yesterday and couldn't find any brass locally. Will order.
Get it done: The rifle balances just ahead of the magazine.
Jdad: The Model 8 is actually a take down rifle. You remove the forend and there is a very unique screw with a lever on it that allows you to separate the barrel assembly from the receiver. Further disassembly requires a special wrench. There are a couple of Youtubes on this. You can get more info at the Great Model 8 Web site.
Removing the forend exposes the screw with the lever handle.
Unscrewing this large screw allows the stock/receiver to be pulled from the barrel assembly.
i really appreciate the time you took to show us how that rifle comes apart--love the knowledge on this forum...
by the way that's a really nice rifle and cartridge combination--great find at a great price--LUCKY :)
That is a great find. You will be glad of the hard rubber butt plate instead of the crescent steel if you shoot it much. I had the exact rifle with the latter butt plate. It was not much fun to shoot.
Update: Took her to the range, and the short version is that the firing pin is not functioning. Not hard to repair, but it means a delay until I can actually shoot this baby ...
Let's see. 35 Remington in an old Remington, tang sight, take down, bought at a pawn shop, one of Mr. Brownings designs, I vote for honorary levergun status! Nice find!
