Bullet performance--sand and water, pictures

Post by getitdone1 »

Here's a few of the bullets I shot through sand and water. The large fragments in lower right corner came from the Barnes 400 gr Original. As you can see, the Remington factory 405 bullet/load retained it's weight very well--especially for sand. Velocity is the difference. 308 Winchester Nosler Partition 180 gr didn't hold together at all in the sand. It did do very well in water. The 300 gr HP Remington bullet that totally flattened-out in water is the one that turned a head of cabbage mostly into mist. The 375 H&H magnum had it's nose bent by the sand but it penetrated 13" of sand. This is also the bullet that penetrated 24 gallon jugs of water and kept on going. It also penetrated about 28" of an (I think) ash tree. Elephant and buffalo medicine for sure.

That 20ga slug sure looks like it'd make a mess if used in a self defense situation (man or beast)...
If these walls could talk, I'd listen to the floor.

Brenneke's are pure evil when they expand. My slug of choice in 12 ga.

To the OP, the funniest thing we ever shot into our sand (rock dust) box were high velocity .17HMR rounds. They barely penetrated an inch and all that were left were copper, lead, and plastic fragments.
