We had 1519 attempted registrations of which 14, or about .9% were interested enough to read the instructions. That's 49 registrations each day (13 more per day than last month) but only a valid entry every other day (on average). That's ignoring the "I'll-beat-the-help-until-they-improve" guy who's figured into the failures.
PS - I'd like to reiterate that this report isn't an attempt to generate appreciation from the membership it is intended to illustrate the problems we have with the huge number of illicit attempts to attack YOU with spam. 1514 of these registrations were likely intended to give you grief. This is why we have had to go to this method of dealing with registrations using the software we do. To my mind, these people are a sort of internet terrorist and it just ticks me off that we have to do this.
Sincerely,
Hobie

As a fellow gun-forum administrator I can attest to the difficulties of separating the wheat from the chaff. At one point the board I co-administer was getting upwards of 50-60 join attempts per day with only about 8 or 9 of those being legitimate human members. We made some adjustments to the software (that I won't detail here, but PM if interested) that really cut down on the number of bots and spammers that we had to weed through.
We now get about 10 requests to join per day on average and for the most part they're all legit. We do get the occasional spammer or spambot attempt that breaks through the automated software barrier to the admin approval barrier (we use manual approvals as well), but for the most part they're all people.
Now if we can just figure out how to keep the bad apples we've banned from attempting to rejoin..............but that's another story........
Jay you hit the nail on the head there. Today here in Tampa officials made busts on a criminal ring that claimed over 130 million in fraudulent tax returns, and that's just what they know about.
Thanks again Hobie and welcome to the new comers.
