PHOTOS ADDED OR State Silhouette Championship...

Post by jdad »

I earned this. I beat a Master class shooter by 1 point. I didn't do so well, in Cowboy class. 5th place medal, but it was my fault for not having enough water for the entire day. Only 10 points between 1st and 5th, in Cowboy class and no records were set. We shot Hunter and Standard class, in the morning, then Cowboy during the heat of the day, at 2pm.

Congratulations jdad,

That was an accomplishment! Very nice trophy too.

congrats, also. Knowing how hard it is to see the targets down, there I think that was a great bit of shooting. shooting cowboy in the afternoon may have helped. why don't they
paint their targets black?

Everything is still fairly green. The afternoon sun hits the targets head-on. The 2 best colors we have found, for this situation, are White or Fluorescent Orange.

Smallbore "Hunter" class uses a scoped sporter style rifle, with a tapered barrel, that has a 2 pound or greater trigger. I use a Browning (Winchester) 52, with a Weaver V16. Any rifle that groups 1-1/4", at 100m, is "minute-of-ram" good enough, but you need a piece of glass that has 100% repeatable settings/zeros 100% of the time. The chickens are at 40m, pigs 66m, turkeys 77m, and rams 100m. The "sweet spot", on the rams is smaller than a 3x5 card.

Hope this helps.

It seems like .22 LR allows shooters many of the same thrills and challenges the long-range, centerfire crowd enjoys, but on much-easier-to-find 100 yard/meter ranges. I'll have to see if anyone locally is hosting such matches; they sound really fun... 8)

I have a Ruger 77/22 I put a Green Mountain bull barrel on that I'd like to see the potential of. For that matter, I'd like to see if my little Ruger 96/22 would be up to the task, since I still prefer leverguns for 90% of my shooting.

Nice rig and congrats!

Between you and Hobie I just had to check. My club has matches once a month. I have a Win 75 that I've been on the fence about keeping since I get bored punching paper. I just need the blocks to mount a Tasco 8-24 and some range time. Sounds like this might be it's new lease on life...

I don't think the 75 has a tapered barrel though. :?

The 75 would qualify for "Standard" class. As long as it weighs no more than 10.5 pounds scoped and has a "safe" trigger. "Hunter" class is 8.5 pounds max scoped. I started with a V24, but it was too much power. One of the old Weaver KT15 scopes is actually pretty good, for both classes.

Thanks for the info jdad! Might get the 452 set up for this and play in both classes...

I figure 16-18 power should work.

I shot all the way up to AAA using a CZ452 American.....great rifle. I did respring and shim the trigger though (down to 2.2 pounds), with a Brooks/Yo Dave kit. Unfortunately CZ has discontinued this model. I shoot 1 gun, for both classes. I only need to remember 1 trigger and 1 set of scope settings.

I'd heard the 452 series was being replaced. Too bad because they are a lot of rifle for the money. Well, they were until everyone else found out about them and drove the price up...
