Rossi Guide Screw

Post by Washita »

I need a left-side cartridge guide screw for my Rossi 92 .357 Mag. Steve Young doesn't have one, sez these parts are hard to get since Taurus bought out Rossi. Anybody know where I can find one?

If these can be had in extra-long, that'd be my preference. A gunsmith friend did an action job for me awhile back & said mine was too short, hence the problem. He could only get one or two threads engaged, put some Loctite on it but it didn't hold. If I can get a long one he'll cut it to fit.

The rifle is great, but it's in the gun safe till I can get a new screw. :|

A friend of mine says that one can get screws of various threads from Tru-Value and sometimes with the correct head (not needing modification). :?:

Thanks, guys, for the info. This might turn out to be a false alarm--or maybe not. After posting, I did what I should've done in the first place, & called Rossi. They're sending me a replacement screw which should be here in a week or two. However, as the original one wouldn't work, it's possible that the replacement might not either. Should that be be the case, your info will probably turn out to be just what I need to get a screw that works. I love the rifle, but don't want to compete (Cowboy Silhouette) with equipment that's not reliable.

Much obliged.

What phone number did you have for "Rossi"...?

You could build up one of the screws with J-B Weld and file it down, perhaps.

Washita,

I had an early 90s Puma that was a lemon from muzzle to butt plate. I stripped out three or four screws that should never have stripped. The screws were undersized and or the threads were not completely formed or they were too short.
I must have ordered three or four from Mike and M&M. Whoever makes or made their screws does or did lousy work.

I finally sold that Rossi to a gunsmith as a parts gun. It was junque and I wasn't about to spend another cent on it.

Hopefully the new screw you get from Rossi will fit properly.

Just bought one myself and they're still at it.
When I took mine apart, I had to really peer down on some of them in good light just to SEE the threads. I literally thought some were not even threaded.

Maybe some of our machinist members could tell the rest of us how difficult or practical it might be to purchase one of the smaller lathe/milling machines they sell, in order to make replacement screws for things like this...?

Even if the screw had to be made starting from a 'stock' threaded screw of some sort, turning the other parts to proper specifications would seem to require some sort of lathe or milling machine.

I've sometimes drooled over the 30" or so lathes and thought of all the beautiful gun barrels I could custom-taper, and so forth (...like I know even the basics of that   ).

Anyway, perhaps one of the more affordable and smaller machines could help those of us who are 'adventerous' enough, to piddle around with threading or modifying small parts...?

While they are still maintaining the Rossi name and website, the number you posted still is Braztech/Taurus and is routed to the same customer service dept. I hope you have a better experience with them than I. I ordered a part, and they sent the wrong one. They were amiable enough, and are sending a replacement for no charge. I hope it will be the right one.

Me too. My 'smith said everything in my rifle looked good except this screw. It's really a nice gun except for this problem, and I can't believe it's unsolvable.
