Need a little help here

Post by Bruce Scott »

Tried removing the tang sight from the H&R TD today only to find that the rear screw is either epoxied or superglued in. It will not turn. The other two were tight but turned OK.

Any suggestions? I am trying to contact the previous owner to see what he used.

Try putting the tip of your soldering iron into the screw and let it heat up a while, then try it. Works real well with loctite so maybe will work.

The mild heat is a good idea. If it's Locktite, acetone will loosen it. If you don't have acetone, check your (just kidding) or your wife/girlfriend's fingernail polish remover to see if it's acetone based.

Be careful with acetone on the stock finish.

You have to wonder what the previous owner was thinking using those screws!

You may already have done this, but when I have a screw indicating reluctance, I put the screwdriver in place and give it a couple sharp raps with a hammer (as though driving it in like a nail). This often helps considerably to free-up a "stuck" screw.

I agree with M.M Wright on the soldering gun thing so you don't mess up the wood. Set your gun where both of your hands are free to apply the torque needed to loosen 'em. Heat, then a perfect fitting quality screwdriver with a fat handle---using your body weight, bear straight down, at a 90 degree angle. They will loosen :D

Those phillips head screws need to go :D --------------Sixgun

Place the rifle in a drill press vise in the drill press.

Using a screwdriver bit of the correct size mounted in the chuck, use the drill press to hold down on the bit in the screw while turning the drill chuck by hand.

If all else fails, try a "hammer driver", a hand impact tool. http://www.ehow.com/how_4809810_use-han ... river.html

Those seem to be wood screws in the picture. They must be glued in. The sloldering iron idea sounds like the best way to me. Be patient. It takes some time for the heat to break down the glue. Good luck!

Got it out! A couple of hammer hits on the screw driver followed by heat did the job.

Thanks again for all of your advice.
