All sights should be removed (when looking from shooting position behind them, from left to right and installed from right to left. You'll have better luck with a brass punch than a nylon one because of the nylon's 'give' when struck. On really stuck sights a sight pusher is your best bet but you may not have one available.

I've had several rear sights that my brass punch couldn't move either and I found that if I placed a few layers of electrical tape on the tip of my steel punch, placed it very carefully so as not to mar the barrel, I could coax off even the tightest of sights.

But whichever method you choose, be careful to avoid digging into the barrel and support the barrel using some wood so that you have a solid surface to hammer on.

remshooter,

I had a Marbles rear sight on my Marlin that was so tight I could not get it off ... period.

I ended up removing the elevator and putting a piece of cardboard under the sight and using a screwdriver to lift it off the barrel. This removed the tension and then I was able to drive the sight out. I did have an assistant too, that helped.

There was way too much tension on the springy part.

Just something to consider as you work with it.

1) With a peep sight, that M1895 will need a front sight blade taller than issue, in order to zero (it'll shoot too high with the peep all the way "down").
The front sights are a pinned-in blade, and XS Sights makes/sells the proper height replacement with a white line that can be blackened.

2) Make sure the rifle is solidly supported (as in a vise) as close to the dovetail as possible when drifting sights - NOT hand or lap held, as there will be too much "give" to properly drive the sight.

3) Buy a commercial, or make from the dovetail section of an old longleaf bbl sight, a dovetail slot filler blank, to replace the recently removed rear bbl sight.

4) Post pics. ;)
