New Rossi M92 not ejecting

Post by jimco »

Took a new Rossi to our shoot today and had problems with it ejecting shells. Thinned the ejector when I got home per Nates video. Seems to help some but still not ejecting every shell. I have to SLAM it closed to get the ejector to grab the shells but it's not 100%. Any ideas what is causing this?

It sounds like you are talking about the extractor, not the ejector. The extractor is the bar on top of the bolt that hooks the rim to pull the spent case out. If you are having to slam it closed so the extractor hook will grab the rim two things come to mind. First place to look is the extractor cut out there at the chamber mouth. It may require some relieving to allow the extractor to grab the rim easier. To check this, close the action on an empty chamber to see if the extractor is pushed up because it's running into the too shallow relief cut.
If this doesn't seem to be the problem the next place to look is the hook itself. It may require some metal be removed from the inside of the hook so it can reach over the case rim.

One question though, does the extractor grab the empty but as it starts out it looses grip?

Nate,
You are correct, it is the extractor. Checked it again, it's loosing the grip as it ejects. Seems to be grabbing all now, earlier it was leaving some flush with the chamber.

Ok, you may need to lower the extractor some. You said you thinned it per my DVD correct? If you did you will remember the slight pad that was left just in front of the hook. If you remove a bit of material from that pad it will lower the extractor some to allow it to grasp the rim better.

Thanks Nate, I'll give it a try this weekend. By the way, I did the complete tune up per your video and it is a completely different gun now.....smooth as a baby's bottom.

Just another chance show what this man is made of. My .357 sure runs better after the video fix.

Couldn't wait until the weekend, had to give it a try. Took just enough off the extractor to where a fingernail hangs on top of extractor groove in bolt when extractor was reinstalled. Ran about 70 cartridges thru the gun and every one ejected like it should. Nate, thanks again for your help and advice.

No problem and thanks to all for those kind words. I must confess though, when someone says he bought my DVD and is still having problems I feel compelled to do what I can to fix it. Part of it is the fact that no two of these guns are exactly a like but I had to do a one-size-fits-all DVD in order to keep it from being 12 hours long and all kinds of confusing.
So, it seems like I should share some of the other things I've found with some but not all of these guns.
