OT- Gun parts dug today

Post by Mike D. »

A digging buddy, his daughter, and I went up to excavate a 1850s miner's cabin site. The site sits along a ravine in the Sierra Nevada mountains at the lofty elevation of 5800'. If the broken bottles are any indication, this man, or maybe men, lived there for at least two seasons and made enough from the claim to afford quality gin, schnapps, bitters, and the actual medicine necessary for human ailments.

Among the many metal and other artifacts we exposed were parts to a percussion rifle. All that could be found with my detector were the butt plate, part of a lock and pieces of the forestock brass where it meets an octagonal barrel. No handguns were found on this excursion, but we have discovered revolvers from various manufacturers on other forays into the high lonesome. Most are the simple and common pepperbox types that were popular with the gold seekers, but on occasion a relic percussion Colt turns up.

My camera's battery decided to wane, so no more photos were taken to record the artifacts that were recovered. In the hearth of the cabin was the miner's personal scales, a small set contained in a oval tin box that resembles a glasses case. The counter weights were missing, but the balance beam and little brass cups were intact. It is truly amazing what you can find in places where these intrepid souls traveled to, and spent a portion of their lives, in search of riches. Most failed in this endeavor and left after a year or two, but some remained for the rest of their lives. Next week we have another, much larger, site to hike into. :)

Most of their everyday trash was sent out the back door. There was boot leather, elk and deer bones, and plenty of broken quality bottles, which are our original objectives when digging these cabin sites out. Another thing that we often find, but not yesterday, are various military belt buckles. Some are from 1840s state militia regiments from Ohio, New York, and early California, and also Naval organizations. Broken bottles litter the surrounding areas, many of which were intentionally broken to make temporary candle holders and oil burning lamps.Image

What would merely appear to be a pile of rocks to many who see it is actually the collapsed remains of the cabin fireplace. These were fashioned from local rocks and usually had a pipe made from cut and stacked oil cans. The hearths collapse over the decades, leaving a jumbled rock pile. Excavating into and under them often produces the miner's most personal effects, left behind when, for whatever reason, the site was abandoned.

knowing how frugal people were back then I would think death would be the only reason personal items, firearms parts or any usable item would be left.

Mike,

I'm surprised that miners from the 1850's would have had oil cans available for them to use as chimney-flue liners. Upon reflection, I suspect you don't mean motor oil. You must mean something like lamp-oil?

How can you be sure of what was contained in these cans? Do any label markings still exist? Probably size alone is a good clue, but I have no idea of what size these flue liners may have been. :)

Yes, lamp oil cans, for sure. Most do not have labels, but the tops are embossed with the manufacturers names. by now, all metal has corroded away, except for iron and barrel hoops. those things sometimes look almost new. Some cans, like those containing potted meats and oysters, have brass labels that are entirely readable. Same goes for food bottles with lead labels. Those are dandy and absolutely saved. :)

Thanks very much for the clarification Mike. I've got a nice metal detector that I don't use often enough; you're an inspiration ! :D
