Marlin 1894 - 357/38

Post by gm42 »

Hey Guys,

I have a Marlin 1894 357 rifle and have a question about ammunition. In the past I have hand loaded ammunition for hunting purposes, but I want to be able to buy factory ammunition also.

What is the best factory load for medium game (including deer and pigs)?
What is the best factory load for small game hunting?
What is the quietest factory load?

Also, what would be the best factory load for self defense out of this rifle?

Thanks,

Geoff

I haven't hunted with my .357 but if you want 2c worth, here goes:

There's nothing quiet about a .357 load, but the 38s would be relatively quiet, especially if they make them in a cowboy load.
Popular opinion for deer size game seems to be 158gr soft points in .357.
For small game you want something that will punch straight through because if the bullet expands your small game will expand too, but I guess that depends on whether you want to eat it or vaporize it. If you want to eat it I'd look for a 38 with a solid point.

Best factory hunting load would be a 158gr jsp or 180gr jhp, depending on the size of the deer in your area. A light .38 load is going to be your best chance for a "quiet" load. Small game, I'd use a 38 wadcutter.

I use the American Eagle 158gr JSP for everything.
