I know the 1873 is not as strong as the 92 or a Marlin 1894 or the Winchester 94. But I have always wanted a 73 and for quite a while I have struggled with what caliber to get.
I know the traditional caliber is 44WCF, and I know that the 45 Colt is very popular, but I want to mainly hunt deer, a coyote or two, and plink of course. So I have been wondering which way to go if I get one.
I don't really want to mess with the 44WCF, I have enough calibers to reload. And I have just about decided on maybe one day getting a 73 in .357, although I am not totally opposed to the 45 Colt. Which one do you recond would make the best deer round, taking into consideration that you can't hot rod either caliber much when shooting the 73.
Are all factory loads safe in the .357 Replica 73? I would like to shoot a fairly heavy 180gr load, but I doubt it's safe. Has anyone here done any load work for the 73 in .357? How about load work for the 45 Colt in the 73?
Winchester 73 Replica's? 357 mag? Safe Pressures?

I dont reload but I do shoot the Buffalo Bore 180Gr 357 in my carbine and revolvers. Buffalo Bore says on their site http://www.buffalobore.com/ammunition/default.htm#357
that their ammo is safe in ANY 357 made. My experience is that the Ammo is VERY Accurate in anything I have shot it out of (a M94 Compact, Blackhawk, and GP-100) The recoil is there but not really that bad. It has a great reputation on game, but I have not hunted with it yet. I have contemplated the Cimarron 1873 for all the reasons you mention.

Terry is correct. The Uberti 73 in 357 is proofed for the the 357 and is safe to use with any 357 factory load. Reload it within SAAMI specs and you will be a happy camper. The 1873 SRC is my favorite levergun.

I use my .45Colt '73 Uberti Rifle for mainly CAS. In that venue I use about 32grs of FFFg, behind a 225gr bullet or 6.5 grs. of RedDot behind the same bullet. However, I've had not problem using standard factory load in .45Colt. I prefer the CCI Lawman with it's 200 grain "Flyin' Ashtray." Right smart load. Any load in a Colt SAA is safe in that rifle.Lastmohecken wrote:...but I want to mainly hunt deer, a coyote or two, and plink of course. So I have been wondering which way to go if I get one.

However, the .357 will be cheaper to shoot.
