New Gun
Just purchased A Marlin 39a, noticed right away that the scope mount holes in the reciever were bigger than the screws Marlin provided. Got the chance to shoot it today, nothing but trouble, stovepiping, failure to extract, and weak ejection, however the accuracy was outstanding. Should I throw A fit or is it in need of a good break in session?
Re: New Gun
Sounds like the extractors/springs have gone weak. Should be fixable. If it shoots good it is worth fixing.
New or second hand?

Re: New Gun
Is the action full of packing grease? Some new guns need cleaning before they'll work.
Otherwise, take it back. A 39A misbehaving just isn't normal. I bought a new one a few years back, had the trigger lightened to 3.5 pounds, and have not done one other thing other than shoot and clean, shoot and clean. It NEVER stovepipes or jams, regardless of what ammo I use, the weather, the stage of the moon . . . you get the idea.
Accurate? Oh, yes, indeed.

Yes, I did clean the weapon prior to firing.

Re: New Gun
Hey Rich, good to see you! I think before I do that I am going to try a different brand of ammo. I just cycled a tube full of federals without a hitch. I have often been accused of throwing a fit too soon!Mokwaw wrote:Hi Eric,

Re: New Gun
These problems have been documented, on new 39A's, produced over the last 3-4 years, on http://www.rimfirecentral.com. It appears to be hit or miss, from rifle to rifle. The most common problem is the weak extractor and usually a weak main spring that causes a lot of FTF.
It is new and should be sent back to Marlin, to be made right. They will make it right.

Re: New Gun
You got the right idea. Try several different brands of ammo. If it continues to malfunction, take it back and throw a pure-dee hissy fit until they send you home with a new rifle just to keep you from running off business.eric65 wrote:Hey Rich, good to see you! New Marlin 39's are not supposed to act that way.

Re: New Gun
What ammunition were you using before the Federals?
My Marlin 39a Mountie is several decades old. I've never had a problem with it feeding any type of .22 short, long, or long rifle. I guess what they say is true - they don't make them like they used to!
Good luck!

Re: New Gun
I was using Winchester high velocity round nose long rifles, and you are right, they dont. This gun felt and looked good and was cheaper than a Browning. I should have bought the BL-22 I was looking at. Lesson lerned always buy the best you can afford.Ysabel Kid wrote:What ammunition were you using before the Federals?

Idiot alert, my mistake, gun works fine. Operator error.
Re: New Gun
We're all idiots....what did you change that helped?? I've seen and had some 39s that didn't like to be turned sideways when shucking a round.eric65 wrote:Idiot alert, my mistake, gun works fine. Operator error.

Re: New Gun
small screw inside reciever that is used to hold the ejector down during cleaning. I discovered that it was turned ever so slightly, causing a hangup. no problems since.

Re: New Gun
I ordered a williams 5d reciever sight for it today, couldn't bring myself to scope it. I also did not want to anger the lever gods.

Re: New Gun
eric65,
Glad you found the problem. Iv'e owned 2 pre '70's rifles that I couldn't fault in any way. Very accurat and always functioned properly. I gave both of mine to gransons after I got my Kimber Classic and anschutz 54. they shoot a little better, but, aren't levers. Very few finer .22,s than the 39,s.
