O.T. Sighthunter flipped her car...

Post by piller »

On March 30, Sighthunter flipped her car as she was driving to school. She is fine except for a broken nose, which is a miracle. My wife and I have been telling her to slow down for a long time, and she doesn't want to listen. Maybe after we get the car fixed she will be willing to slow down. If it had a carburater instead of all this electronic stuff, I would limit the amount of foot feed travel and fuel flow so that she couldn't speed, but I can't do that on her car as I don't know how. She will not admit to how fast she was going, but she did not receive a ticket. The investigating officer was very polite and professional. The ironic part is that the class she was going to was cancelled and she could have stayed home if she would have woken up early enough to check online with the college.

Maybe she has learned, maybe not. When my wife was a young driver, she had an accident that was due in part to her aggressive driving. Her dad was smart. They got the car fixed mechanically, fender replaced, etc, but dad told her, YOU pay for the deductible or we tell the shop to just put primer on the repair and forgo the paint work. She drove the car with a primered fender as she couldn't afford the $250 deductible. She did ease up a bit, reminded every day when she got into the car....

Glad she is ok. My daughter now 34 takes great delight in telling me how fast she used to go when she borrowed my cars in her teens :o :o

Perhaps you remember the young ladies who flipped their truck immediately ahead of us last Thanksgiving. Sighthunter only broke her nose it could have been worse. Bad things happen very fast at 65 mph. I'm very glad she ONLY broke her nose.

Glad she's Ok.

Kid #2 tried to take out the power supply to a Burger King last summer with my Dodge.

He slowed down for a while but I had to tune him up the other night for hot rodding around.

Took me a couple times to get it right.

I think if you'll check there are devices that can be put on a vehicle to limit it's speed. Call your local car dealer that sells your brand as a start. My big truck at work is set to top out at 63 MPH. After you get used to it, it's not all that bad. I even drive my pick up like an old man now too.

On most any of the newer cars (all OBDII diagnostic capable) the dealer can set the top speed of the vehicle. Some of the cars shut off the fuel flow when you try to go faster, others shut off the spark, but any of them can have the maximum speed set to a limit you specify. The factories usually put in a limit of 100 mph, but it can be changed to whatever you want. Just remember that it is a hard limit, and you can't get the vehicle to go faster even if you are driving and want/need more speed.

i smashed up enough muscle cars that i bought in the 70's and early 80's at reasonable prices, before the yuppie pukes who never went over the speed limit, started buying them up and turning them into collectable's    :x , that i could be retired today! make her pay her own way, repairs, insurance premiums, fines, and she will wise up and slow down.

Glad she's ok, broken noses are character builders... if we learn why we got them. But youth and autos are a notoriously bad mix.

Piller,

Maybe shock treatment is in order. See if you can arrange for her to attend the autopsy of an accident victim. That might slow her down. Then again it may not. Some people never learn and at that age they think they are indestructable.

Good luck.

Not to hijack the thread, but my 16 yr old got his permit the other day. Both of us have been busy and it rained HARD for a couple days, so he hadn't had his very first behind-the-wheel exercize yet (I figured church parking lot or some such to get the hang of braking, etc before dealing with the road). Tonight on the way home from church, my WIFE let him drive. I guess it was funny, TO THEM, but he forgot his headlights, almost got clobbered, and had a terrible time modulating the throttle to maintain the village 30 mph.

I was mad at HER for jumping the program.....

Glad she came through it in not too bad of shape. One of my sons totaled the family car just one week after he got his driver's license. He had to pay the increased deductible, plus his portion of the insurance. It took several years to get the deductible back down to normal, but he sure experienced the financial consequences of crazy driving and learned a good lesson.
