How to mount a saddle ring on a Marlin?

Post by 03gringo »

I have a brass saddle ring made by Wild West Guns that I purchased long ago. I want to mount the ring on one of my Marlin 1894 rifles. I have a 336 Texan with an original ring in place, would like to mount the ring on the 1894 rifle so it looks "right". I would appreciate any help other members may have regarding how to locate the saddle ring, and any potential problems to avoid.

Kenny -

Welcome aboard! I'm curious too, as I'd like to do this with a couple of my 1894 Marlins...

Measure... LOTS, so you don't have to do any welding between driling holes.

Seriously, I'd want a template. I don't know how the aft part of the respective receivers differ (336 & 1894), but it might behoove you to disassemble both and compare 'em. If memory serves, on the winchester the ring stud is mounted into the "meaty" part of the reciever ahead of the locking lug. I'd suspect Marlin'd do the same.

If so... measure from the ring stud hole to the hammer screw on the 336 and lay out that same center-to-center distance on the 1894 and see if you're in the midst of a thick area of the sidewall of the 1894.

Then again, I could be all wrong!

Does your 1894 have a cross bolt safety?
I drilled and tapped a cross bolt safety "Filler" and mounted a saddle ring to it, on my 1895G. No extra holes and can be converted back to stock if needed.

Here is a picture of a vintage 94 with saddle ring, a staple is used, like on a Winchester 92.

That must be an early '94 with the staple saddle ring because later they went with the threaded post.

I thought there was a thread a while back on sling(saddle) rings. Here it is, 2 pages. http://www.levergunscommunity.com/viewt ... lit=staple
