OT-Major Failure, Wow

Post by jkbrea »

Hope these pictures come out right. A friend sent this to me. A man brought his S&W Model 629 into his local PD. He said he was testing a new load. He heard a very loud bang and received a gash to his forehead. When he came to his senses, this is what he saw. :o
I don't have any of the particulars of what he did or how bad his injuries were. I'll try to find out and post it.

Wow... I've shot mucho 300 grainers in my 629, some pretty hot, and it's still tight as a drum.....I wonder if he had one of those loads where you just dip the case full of powder and compress the load??

We covered this S&W Kaboom several weeks ago in this thread.

Guess it's making the email rounds.

My guess is a double charge of a fast burning powder.

Actually Joe, I think this is the third time that set of photos and message have been posted here.

I am not complaining. We all need occasional reminders to pay strict attention while we are reloading ammo. This one is about as good a reminder as I've ever seen.

You are so right Doc. I only brought the old thread back up so we could compare notes.

There is a thread over on TRF about a 50th Anniversary .44 Mag Flat Top that was blown up just like this S&W.
http://www.rugerforum.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=69375

It amazes me how many KABOOMS in .44 Mags I've read about. Colt Anacondas, Ruger SBHs, Ruger Redhawks, S&W 29s.

As powerful as the .44 Mag is, what are people trying to do, or are they just so utterly careless they they don't pay attention thinking their guns are indestructible?

Beats me all to pieces.

Oops, sorry. I guess I missed it the first time around
I don't reload yet but when I start, I'm going to ease into it.

Wonder why the cartridges not in line with the chamber are ruptured? Seems like they'd have had to detonate, which means either their primers went off, or some MAJOR concussive force somehow ignited their powder charges...!

Any ideas on that?

No problem at all. Like I said we all need a reminder to pay attention from time to time.

let me suggest that you go ahead and jump into reloading with both feet. your best route would be to buy a RockChucker or Partner Press Reloading Kit from RCBS. It has everything you need to get started except dies, shellholders and reloading components at a pretty modest price.

Just print those photos and stick them up over your reloading bench as a reminder of what carelessness can do to a fine six-gun.

Things like this is why I like my Lyman electronic powder dispenser...Every charge weighed...Looks to me like someone got in a hurry..

He was probably using the bump up your load until your gun blows up then back off a grain style of handloading.
