OT - Butt Out Tool - *Updated*

Post by deerwhacker444 »

I'm gonna get laughed at, but I gotta know, has anybody used the Butt Out tool when field dressing your deer...

If you use it, does it aid you in removing colon by not having to split the pelvis? If you use the tool as designed, how hard is it to remove the bladder from the inside once the colon has already been loosened.?

We have them in the shop. Never fails to get a lot of laughs and some real involuntary cringing. Have talked to ONE fella who uses it and loves it. Claims it makes the job so much neater. Also says he's done a "half-dozen" deer with it.

I have used one on 3 deer now, and it works as advertised when used as instructed.

I haven't had to split a pelvis since trying it...

Bought one, keep meaning to try it, but haven't yet.

We DID get one of the big machete-like knives that has a big notch in it down the middle of the blade to crack through ribs with, and THAT tool works pretty well. Forget the name.

Will it work for elk also. I saw in Cabelas they make a larger one but it advertises it's for deer.

I have never split a pelvis. I just stick the knife blade in there and cut all the way around and then gut etc. just pull out.

Like Marc, just cut around the anus, 'bounce" your blade along the inside of the pelvic bone and it loosens right up. I do this first before opening up the belly. Then it all pulls up and out through the cavity. I have seen a butt plug used and well it was ugly at best.

Cut the tissue off the tool, then rinse it off & stuff it in your pocket, just like you do with the knife... no worries.

Okay..Okay...Like dealing with a bunch of school kids......... :? ..

So I took a buck with my bow yesterday which I posted in a previous post. Since I didn't get very many serious answers, I had to try it for myself last night. And I can verify that the Butt-Out tool works as advertised.

However, I was a bit disappointed and I need some advice.

I didn't grow up with anybody who knew how to hunt. Although my dad enjoys hunting now, he wasn't much of a hunter when I was a kid. So everything I learned was by reading or somebody showing me how things are done. I was taught to split the pelvis to get at the bladder and remove the colon. The buttout loosened up the intestine, I tied it off and pulled it back thru from the inside, that part worked like it was supposed to. However, I was not able to get the bladder out and had to eventually split the pelvis anyway.

I can see how not splitting the pelvis would keep some dirt and hair from getting on the meat. I would like to do the best job possible when field dressing my animals. For you guys why carve around the bung or use the buttout, how do you get everything loose without splitting the pelvis.

Educate me please....

It's interesting how you guys pull it from the inside with the butt out or just a knife.

We tend to slit the throat length ways and knot the sophosagus (correct my spelling if needs!)
Then remove the guts and tie off the poop pipe.

Now you can get the deer home or carry on cleaning in the field. By very carefully cutting around the anus the whole lot gets drawn out not in and sometimes the bladder comes with it.
I imagine with the tool the same can be done only the pipe will be turned inside out, messy for you but no poop in the meat.
Usually I would reach in and pinch the bladder off and cut it.

Let me state I have never used the tool. But I have been following this thread and just had to jump in.

First,... splitting a bucks pelvic bone with a small hatchet, as I was taught, was to access and remove the scent glands, to keep the meat from being contaminated.

Second, I believe this would be a great tool and probably functions as advertised, but,... I would assume it is used AFTER the animal is gutted. I don't believe it was designed to remove anything above the short anal tract section left behind after the lower intestine is cut away during gutting. We all know how difficult it is to remove this specific area from a carcass. Even with the entire upper tract is cut away.

Lastly,... if one is schooled in the splitting of the pelvic/scent gland removal,... as stated above, it is pretty much a redundant tool since that area will be wide open for cutting out, but would not remove those glands.
