OT - How to Feed a Ruger 10-22?

Post by don Tomás »

After wanting one since the 70's, finally purchased a Stainless Ruger 10-22 with the synthetic stock. "On sale" at Big 5 for about $280 buckaroos ( :o ), but I was happy to find one at any price out here in Kalifornia. While the rifle sits in Kalifornia gun jail for the next 10 days, I've been looking for ammunition... any ammunition. There is none to be had at any price over here. Same deal on the internet; Cabelas, Midway, etc., nothing expected until November at one place. Anybody have any "secret" supply sources they're willing to share? Thanks!
Tom

Oh, Big 5 said that the going price on the 525 round brick Remington brass washed were going for $24.95, if they had any to sell.

:( :( :( Heck - For all the difference it'd make, you should get the gun w/o it's serving jail time.
It sounds like your gun's pretty well controlled through ammo deprivation, as it is.

IMHO, it rots.

Don't know anything about this brand, but it's the cheapest thing I could find in stock.

At Grafs.

Slip across the border to AZ, NV, or which ever state is closer. You might have some better luck.
My wife checks Wal-Mart every time she goes in for .22s. Usually there's not much there, but sometimes she scores.

Have your friends check for you too.

Ain't nothing here you'd want to buy. Wal-Mart has CB caps and a few small boxes of shorts. The gun shops have the 550 packs for around $35.00 each, which is why they've got 'em still in stock. I see more and more center fire stuff showing up on Wal-Mart racks each week. I think it will only be a matter of time before 22LRs are once again available. The 10-22 functions best with good quality 22 long rifle ammo. The cheap stuff usually burns dirty and the residue clogs the works.

You've waited almost 4 decades to buy one, a few more months won't hurt.

a common occurrence. Almost had a riot the other day when my wife wanted all 10 bricks and there was a lady behind us waiting too...

How do you feed it? I load the mag, insert it into the weapon, chamber a round and it takes care of the rest each time I pull the trigger...

ON a mag fed .22, anything but LR ain't gonna feed thru the mag......WalMart at 0600hrs and find out what day their shipments come in.......For awhile, you're gonna have to make a hobby out of finding .22........Of interest is that I could buy almost as much CCI .17 as I could ever want....hmmmmmm

Bluto: Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!
Otter: Germans?

Tom -

Congrats. The last gun my Dad gave me before he died was a Ruger 10/22 - regular, as they had not started making all the variations yet. It is simply my favorite .22. Fast, accurate, and just a ton of fun to shoot. I have three now - well, two, as one belongs to Y2K when he gets old enough to legally own them. His is a stainless with a synthetic stock - the model K10-22RP "All-Weather". We just shot it a bunch this past week up at my father-in-laws. He has a scope mounted on it and loves playing "sniper" - he'll put one target behind another to pick off the hostage-taker without shooting the hostage. With .22's you can play this for hours without breaking the bank! The other one I have is a 10/22T, and it is, hands-down, the most accurate rifle I own.

I've been picking up bricks of Winchester X-Pert's (550 rounds) at Wally-world for $12.97 each when they are in. They are in about every 10th visit. The same brick is going for $36 at a gun store not 5 miles down the road! All I can say is horde them when you see them - and good luck! :D

22 is still hit and miss in Oklahoma and Arkansas. I paid $15+ for a box of "333" Winchester at a gun and pawn in Stilwater a couple of weeks ago.

I goes out the door as fast as they ship it in at most Walmarts and Bass Pro in OKC and 'burbs.

Here's a 50yd target using Remington Golden Plated 550pk bulk.

Shot with a bone stock 10/22 out of the box, a Bushnell 3-9x32, and a rest. Didn't sort the ammo, break in the barrel, hone the trigger, etc.... Just loaded up the mags and shot.

Both my 10/22s and Ruger MKIII's shoot these perfectly.

So I went out and searched every Wal-mart I came across between Fl and Alabama and bought what I could get my hands on. I think I ended up with about 20 boxes. I think they were about $17 a box.

The WalMarts here have started having ammo again. There is plenty of 22 here. CCI, Remington bulk packs, and auto match. The rumor I hear is the Federal Auto Match is good in 10-22's.
Maybe it will catch up out your way soon.

around my "neck of the woods" (southern kaliphornia) .22 rimfire ammo is VERY scarce...dealers say "it's sold as fast as we get it in"...

i suspect the current occupant of the white house and his views on firearms ownership is influencial...
if you think you're influencial, try telling someone else's dog what to do---will rogers

I was told by the SG manager of the Wal-Mart about 3 miles away that when their ammo comes in, she waits about an hour or so before telling some of the guys who work there. I suspect that they get their ammo shipments on Wednesdays or Thursdays around here. When I found this out, I was getting 2 100-round boxes of .45 ACP fodder (Winchester USA 230-grain FMJs) for my Glock 21.

Got two 325 packs of Federal 22 rimfire target ammo at my local walmart this morning. Being a good levergunner, I left the other six boxes for my fellow shooters. They were $14 and some change/box.

A good outdoorsman always leaves the place cleaner than he found it. A good gun owner always leaves some ammo for the next guy.
