OT Beretta M/L shotgun.

Post by Nath »

I finaly got it how I want it. The flimsy ram rod has been replaced with a carbon arrow shaft with my turned brass end incorperating a m5 thread for a wad screw I allways carry. The bores have been polished to remove the rough pits as loading and cleaning was awfull. It took me four hours! It is actually 11gauge now with bores of .735-.740 so I had to modify my card punch for a good fitting wad. It does not shoot ball and patch as good as before, no surprise there but I think a thicker patch should correct it or try a fiber wad under the same patch and see what happens. We will see.
Last Monday I got a couple of pheasants and a partridge with it and two squirls. I missed a partridge and a pheasant. Before the mods I missed nearly everything I shot at, I think the rough bores were ruining the seal on the card wads allowing gas into the shot etc.
Any way here she is, Nath.

Nice photo Nath. How does it handle compared to your SxS?
If you have any tips on polishing the bores let us have em, I have a Pedersoli Kentucky .45 smooth bore, it was a wreck when I bought it but all it needs now is a good polish to get rid of rough spots I can feel when loading patched ball, sorry I mean wads and shot!!! I forgot patched ball is illegal here!!

Cheers guys.
Gamekeeper I would love to relieve you of that kentuckian
All I did was use a brass rod (as it was at hand) and glued some 4" cloth stripp to it of an ideal length. Then I wrapped some coures emery paper in it and used a drill to revolve it whilst I stroked it in and out. I gradualy reduced the grit size. It takes time, 2 hours a tube in this case! They are not as new but serviceable now. I love M/Ls you can do alot with them. Is yours a flinter or cap? I had a CVA kentucy .45 Off ticket many many years ago. Before I welded it up  It killed fox's, rabbit many times. It was good for squirl with just a smidge of powder. Any way I cleaned up my act for the feds but would love a smoothy of similar for fun days hunting, give us a shout if you want to part with it.
Sorry, got to add- It handles very different than the Peder as in it is much lighter and I have got use to the Peder following through so with the Beretta I have to keep pushing if you understand.
Chicken my @$$- Bloody fast chickens around here friend

Thanks for the info Nath, :D
The Kentucky is a flinter and I'm sorry not for sale. I may sell my percussion Armi Sport Kentucky Carbine in the future, that too is a .45 smooth bore. I'll try and get some photos of both guns to post. Now the pheasant season is nearly over I'm hoping the new keeper will let us go squirrel hunting again.

Thats somewhat a rare gun, bretta made them for their 300th aniversity.
I have had good luck shooting round balls from one, it would cloverleaf them at 50yds.

I look forward to the pics GK :) Is it me or is there lots of squirrels this year. Went looking for fox this morning (saw two and no shots fired, I think my charm is wearing off) and saw scores of squirrels!
Ogw, that sounds promising :) Can you tell me your load chain for ball?
Cheers, Nath.

It was a rapine mold, I think it was .690 or .710 with pillow ticking patch, I am sure it was pyrodex. I had to file the fornt site to get the correct site picture, but it shot very well. I did bark a squirrel off a tree limb, threw him 10 ft. in the air. There weren't many of those guns made!

I was using a.690 and linen patch @.015" and some olive oilxbeeswax lube. I use pyrodex at something like 75grn equiv. But now since the bore polishing I will have to start all over again  Before it would of made deer meat at 50yds no problem. I was thinking it would be fun to get the odd rabbit or two with it, I'm sure they would be impressed if they knew how rare and how much a privlage it is to be harvested in such a way
