Bullet Performance Parameters?

Post by Lobo »

Hey Guys,

What are the velocity limitations on Speer's .358 diameter, 220 grain flatnose bullet? That is to say, what velocity is too fast for this bullet to perform as designed?

Lobo : I tried to measure the jacket thickness on one but I couldnt get it real accurate. I know what the Kodiaks do with the different jacket thicknesses. The Speer is not bonded core so the jacket might separate sooner. Using an apples to oranges method, or replacing X with Y when X is unknown (you see, this is a scientific answer after all) it seems to indicate an IMPACT VELOCITY of around 2400fps + would separate jacket from core, or peel the jacket and mushroom the lead all the way down. Of course we haven't determined impacting What, but just about anything will upset the bullet at that impact velocity (if I allow my imagination to let it.) What I can find, including checking with one fanatic customer that tinkers with 358 Win all the time is that the Speer will work on game up to 250 pounds with expansion and penetration without losing integrity from an impact velocity of 1600 fps and change to around 2300 and change. Before and after that it performs erradically and unpredictably, according to John Y. the 358 tinkerer. He has shot 17 different N.A. animals and 11 African animals with that caliber and his reloads so he is about as reliable as I can come up with for info on this bullet. I hope this helps, and if you have any questions I'm glad to hook you up with John.
