looking for replacement stock set for Marlin 1895

Post by 45-70- »

I want to replace the trash wood on my Marlin and found a couple of companies. There was a thread awhile back about one gun stock company to avoid, which company was that? I dont want to throw my money away. So far I found Treebone and Gunstocks.com.

45-70 , you might try Precicion Gun Works. I have no experience with them but I have heard good things about them.

I'v used precision a few times & highly recomend them.
I might avoid Boyds but thats only based on one experience. Maybe all their other stocks are useable. :D

leverdude, seems like you have a little experience with fitting stocks. i'd like to pick your brain on this. i bought a buttstock from precision and im about maybe 1/16th away from seating the action. im having a little difficulty at this point getting the lower tang to seat all the way, even with the inletting black im not seeing much what i should remove next. but a bigger question is what process do you use to mate the steel plate to the butt? im a pure novice at this and im surprised ive gotten this far but the cresent steel plate looks like a real challenge to me for sure. i can see that the stock is very wide in proportion to the plate and will have to be sanded down. would you blacken the inside of the plate and start filing the high points? should i drill the screw holes first then bolt it on to see where i should remove wood? any suggestions much appreciated.
