2495 powder to be discontinued

Post by 1886 »

2495 will be going away. 2495 is a superior cast bullet powder and it will be no more in the near future. The prospects of another manufacturer picking it up are negligable. There are other good cast bullet powders out there to be sure but none quite like 2495. 1886.

1886,
Please educate me, I've never heard of 2495 powder. Who makes it?

Accurate Powder. Check out their web page. For you guys that like RL-7 (me included) take a look at 2015. 2015 can be a velocity champ in some straight wall cases. My Marlin Cowboy .45-70 loves 2015 and the M&P 500gr FNGC cast bullet sized at .459". 1886.

I just checked Varmint Al's burn rate chart, listing 107 & he skips over it, jumping from AA2460 over to AA2520, BUT it DOES show 2015 sandwiched between 4198 & Re7. BTW, I've had good luck with H4198 in my .45 Colt '92, using 30grs under a Speer 260-JHP, for about 1450fps from its 24" BBL. Groups real good out to 75yds. Bet I'd get significantly more with a cast bullet, due to its much lower friction. jd45

jd45,

What primer do you normally use with that load?

Joe, right now I'm using CCI 350s, but I've used FED155s in the past. Mag primers were recommended with this powder. Now I'm curious about that 2495 would work in .45 Colt rifle loads, if I could get my hot little hands on some while it's still out on the shelves. jd45

Joe, I should add that I first became aware of using this powder in .45 Colt pistol & rifle loadings after reading a post by Buck Elliot on the Sixgunner.com site. It was he who recommended starting at 22grs with a 255gr lead bullet. He claimed he fired these loads in his Baretta Stampede 7 &-1/2" for 1020fps & in his Uberti 1873 24" rifle for 1420, going thru nearly a thousand rounds with no ill effects, saying the pressure curve & max pressure is easier on guns than pistol powders. He didn't say just what charge he arrived at to get those velocities, just to start at 22grs. jd45

I just ran across some velocity numbers from a range session this past season. I only had six rounds loaded at 22grs using a Meister .452" 250gr RNFP in Starline cases. I fired 3 in my USFA 7-1/2" SA & 3 in my Uberti 1873 Sporting rifle-24". Results are as follows:
USFA....#1-798fps
#2-863fps
#3-790fps.................ES...73
UBERTI.....#1-1088fps
#2-1009fps
#3-1158fps..........ES...149
Looks like it needs more experimentation for a load to work in both SAAs & 1873 rifles. jd45

jd45 I do not think you would be happy with 2495 in the .45 Colt. Much too slow. I should have been more clear, 2495 is a superior cast bullet choice in many rifle calibers. The .30-30, .375 Win, .45-70 and 90, .35 Rem, .405 Win, .32 Win Sp., and or similar cartridges. You get the idea. Sorry for any confusion. 1886.

jd,
Thanks for the information. I copied it for future experimentation.

Thanx 1886, you just helped me to reign in my habit to go after THIS MAGIC POWDER & THAT ONE, you get the idea, in search of MORE FPS & SMALLER GROUPS. OK, I think I'm over this latest attack now.........gotta think calming thoughts.......walk along the beach.......stomp on a few crabs, stuff like that.......I'll be alright, I'll be alright,....I think! Happy New Year! jd45

I know how you feel I suffer from the same affliction. I have had good luck with VV N-110 in the .45 Colt but I do not want to feed your head. 1886.

jd45,
In my Marlin 1894 Cowboy Ltd (24") using a 255 gr. Lyman Cowboy bullet cast from w.w +2% tin, I recorded the following average velocities:

30/H4198/155 - 1,519 f.p.s
30/RL7/155 - 1,465 f.p.s.
29/2015/155 - 1,145 f.p.s.

All were capacity loads. 2015 burns slower than RL7 in the .45 Colt.
At least my lot does.

Well John, from your data, it looks like 2015 is a distant 3rd behind the other two. After reading Paco's article, I had high hopes for Re#7 knocking on the 2K door, but if 1465 is all you got with 30grs..........? I don't see how you could get enough in the case unless you used a 10 foot drop tube. My rifle likes 30 of H4198 & Speers .451" 260JHP, for about 1450. I guess I'll stick with what shoots best. Thanx for posting your data & Happy New Year! jd45
