New (to me) .444S Marlin Rifle

Post by Modoc ED »

This is my (Santa's) present to me for Christmas. Marlin .444S, pre-safety rifle. It was made in 1979.

It has a slight scratch on the wrist -- you can just see it in the picture -- and some very minor wear on the very top of the buttstock right at the recoil pad. There is not one mark, no rust, or any wear, or any blemish on the metal of the rifle and the bluing is perfect. The bore is bright and shinny. Absolutely no sign of even having turned a screw, etc.. I swear -- it appears to be unfired or if fired maybe a half a dozen rounds at most. There isn't even any wear at the lever pivot point and no wear at all on the sides of the hammer. Definitely has not been re-worked, re-blued, etc. An original finished rifle for sure.

The rifle was on consignment with a price of $550.00 on it. I offered $450.00 for it and the gun shop owner countered with $478.00. I took it at $478.00.

I haven't shot it yet as the weather (temps hovering at 8º with lots of snow on the ground) makes range time punishing. When I do shoot it, I'll let y'all know how it does.

EDIT: Re-sized picture to fit everyone's screens better.

Good looking gun, I used to have one just like it. I have had quite a few Marlins pass through my hands over the years, and the 444 I had, is one I wish I had kept.

I had an old Redfield recevier sight on mine. That particular rifle holds a special place in my memory, because I made a very memorable kill with it on a Running buck, on opening morning of deer season, many years ago.

Forgot to say that I also bought myself the book "Marlin Firearms - A History of the Guns and the Company That Made Them" by W.S. Brophy. It is the book sold by Marlin. I got it from Wal-Mart for $55.40 which is a steal. If your local Wal-Mart doesn't have it you can order it at the store or get it off their website. Some places sell the book for $99.00. It is a really great book. Lots of info.

It's a bit pricy but I think every Marlin owner ought to have a copy of it in their library.
