Savage 99 takedown

Post by dogwood2 »

I am considering a Savage 99 takedown in .250-3000. It is only a shooter as the barrel has been cut and the sights are gone. I have read several times that these guns can be inaccurate due to the takedown feature and that headspace cannot be corrected. Has anyone had any experience with these guns? If so, what should I look for to avoid wasting money? I thought it would make a fun little shooter to play with.

My Savage 99F, Featherweight Takedown in 250-3000 made in 1923, is as accurate as any of my other mini-caliber rifles. Those would be a couple of 223s (a Rossi Break Action, a Savage 340 and a Contender) and a 22-250 (Custom Mauser 98) and a 22 Hornet (Ruger #3). Admittedly my 99 was a closet queen for most of its life and the barrel is excellent.

any gun can be screwed up"sights are gone, barrels cut", but takedowns
are easier to mess up quicker. check the headspace and don't use the takedown
feature, some have been twisted together so they don't come apart at all.
ask to test fire it before purchase if possible.

good luck, pokey

What's the point in having a takedown if you are not or can't take it apart?

don't know, i've got a 99 takedown 30-30 that i don't take down!
the savage system has no way to adjust for loosening of the joint,
so the people who claim wisdom in such things , say don't take it
apart if you don't have to.
careful what you wish for, you might just get it.

I have at least 10 savage 99 takedown models and all shoot well. I always take them down to clean and never have any problems. I have proven to my self that taking one down and shooting it does not affect accuracy. If the gun has other problems it will not shoot right takedown or solid frame. By the way, most of these guns will shoot 11/2" at 100 yards. Good luck with your 250-3000. Hecter

Thank you all for your input. I asked the owner today to let me shoot the rifle. I have a few old 87gr. Winchester factory loads which should give it a pretty good test. It is a 1915 model and has, I guess, a 1 in 14 twist. Does anyone have an idea how much it will cost to fit a front sight and proper lyman reciever sight.
