Parkerizing a leveraction?

Post by awp101 »

Anyone here ever done that? Thinking about it for my knock-about 1894C in .357.

Sure, I could get it GunKoted or Dura-Coated but I like park myself.

I said "thinking about", not "committed to"...

I like to think of it as the blue answer to bead blasted or brushed stainless.

My 'old faithful' 1894 is parkerized, and a local smith did it here in Indiana - slimmed up the forend without even asking, and now it is a beautiful gun (I'll try to get around to posting a good picture). I think he told me it was actually easier to do right than bluing was, but I don't know how much equipment you need to do it yourself.

If someone here doesn't know, you could give Brownell's a call.

I know how to park and even better, I know someone who does it for a living!

Just curious and kicking around future possibilities. I know on an AK and FAL I had done, it took a little bit to wear the park in around the action for reliable cycling. If I hadn't parked the AK bolt or the receiver of the FAL so it would match the rest of the kit better I wouldn't have had an issue.

Had I known that up front I would have just cycled them by hand a couple hundred times before ever heading out to the range.

Parkerizing requires bead blasting or similar before the parking.

Nothing wrong with it - so long as you're happy with the results.

Its durable but not completely rust proof - but if you coat the whole thing with CLP and then whipe off, it's much much more rust proof - holds the CLP really well over time.

I've tried parking small pars w/o the bead blast and it doesn't really work out too well - not very uniform and doesn't "take" as well.

Yup, parking drinks oil in and stores it in a manner of speaking. Much easier to maintain even if it's not a purty as a high polish blue.

Not as easy as blue IME. Many times what looks like a scratch in parking can be solved with a wipe down of CLP, CorrosionX, etc.

Of course if it's deep enough, it's like a scratch in any other finish.

I have Parkerized several working guns over the years and have always been happy with the results. I like to so called black Parkerization, which is really a dark grey over the regular which often has a greenish cast to it. It is a good durable finish that will outlast three blue jobs. Many, including myself think it is attractive as well. I wouldn't want it on a high zoot firearm, but for a working gun it is a very good option.

For a finish that's just as tough, and better looking than Parkerizing, I like to brown the beater 336s I rehab. Takes a few days to get it done, but it's easy and looks somehow "more right" than Parkerizing.

Allright.....

For us newbies/dummies, are there any 'cookbook' instructions for blueing/parkerizing/browning we could peruse to see if we have the equipment/smarts/patience to try such a project...?

AJMD, you might google on those questions. I have seen the results of a couple done like that , Park & Browning, Both looked ok , but I still love a deep blue even if it's more trouble to take care of. .....Mutt

Sorry, but I just think parkerizing and black stocks go together, and neither goes well with a levergun. IMHO.

Ah, but Springfield 1903s and M1 Garands were parked (the 03s during refurb in WWII I believe). Both have wood stocks and both shore are purty!

I saw a pre '64 '94 once at a gun show that had been parkerized. It was really pretty. It also had a stamp in the tang from some state Dept. of corrections... I think it was Ill.

How does parkerizing work on the post '64 recievers where re-blueing is not an option? I got some great idea's when I posted my question earlier but parkerizing was not mentioned. Just wondering about more options on these recievers.

Parkerizing is like 'stainless' - some folks just don't like the looks, or feel it is out of place with some guns. Personally, I go with 'functional' myself, as well...

post 64 m94 recievers are made of sintered? steel not sure of the spelling metal. It's a type of casting, I've been told they would iron plate them then blue. When you refinish you're back to the base metal that won't take a proper blue.
