405 grain .458 bullets, who has recipes?

Post by piller »

I bought some 405 grain JSP bullets for my .45-70 yesterday at a gun show in Mesquite and wonder what some of the favorite recipes for this bullet in leveractions are.

For a nice mild load I like 25grs of 2400. I load the Rem 405's up to a little less then 1600fps in my guide gun with 52grs of IMR4895, please double check this before using, and it is very accurate. What are you looking for?

405grn Remington bullet+wlrp+34.5grn of IMR4198. 1886TD 2000 issue winchester/Miroku.
Same loads works equally well for lead bullets of same weight. Although low-moderate velocity, very accurate for me, and comfortable to shoot.

43gr of H4198 = 1700fps in my 1895CB. I may back that down a bit to 40gr.

My 1974 vintage Marlin 1895 is very accurate with 53 grains of H-335 under the Rem 405 JSP. It also kicks like an Army mule and has a muzzle flash that has to be seen to be believed at dusk.

I am going to try all of these loads, though it may take a while. I am looking for something which would take a large animal. I have been toying with the idea of going on a guided hunt for black bear. For now I am just thinking about it.

For the Remington 405 gr. 51.5 gr IMR 3031 in R/P cases, CCI standard primers for a chronoed 1820 fps out of a Marlin 1895SS with 22" barrel. Hard hitting, accurate.

I'm with the gents above. I load H335 55.5 for the more accurate load, 57.5 for the pedal to the metal load. :D

She bucks a might, and BOY oh boy is she a flame thrower in the 16" barrel.

But I LIKE it.

That 3031 load turns out about the same in my 1895SS with a Hornady 350.
