National Do Not Call List

Post by ole pizen slinger »

This might be of help to those of you who have "cell" phones.

In case you didn't know --Cell Phone Numbers Go Public this month! That means that cell phone numbers are being released to telemarketing companies and you will start to receive sale calls. YOU MAY BE CHARGED FOR THESE CALLS in addtion to being aggravated merely by getting them!

To prevent this, call the following number from your cell phone: 888-382-1222. It is the National DO NOT CALL list. It will only take a minute of your time. It blocks your number for five (5) years. You must call from the cell phone number you want to have blocked. You cannot call from a different phone number. For those of us who use Blackberry's it easily works thru those units. It takes about 30 seconds to go thru the whole call.

This is no joke so I would register your # if I were you. I know that all of you hate those stupid sales calls. I register my number with them and it took less than a minute!

Hi Slinger-

I appreciate the warning, but I did google it before acting. Snopes indicates it is not true.

I can't answer for the snopes article. I did, however, call and register my cell phone at the number I listed in the post. And the machine doing the registration process answered as being the "National Do Not Call List" and it did ask for my cell phone number as I stated. If this is a scam, well I guess I fell for it.

Snopes is right.
Per the government, "If you’ve received an e-mail telling you that your cell phone is about to be assaulted by telemarketing calls as a result of a new cell phone number database, rest assured that this is not the case. Telemarketing to cell phone numbers has always been illegal in most cases and will continue to be so", and "FCC regulations prohibit telemarketers from using automated dialers to call cell phone numbers".

We get the same calls it's a scam as we don't have an extended warranty with the company making the calls

We got the car warranty call the other day and the firt thing they asked was the modle of the car. My wife, who took the call, said if they were doing what they said, they should already know. They hung up on her.

The car warranty calls are definately scams. I get a couple of them a month. They refuse to give you a number to call them back, they don't know what telephone number they called to get you, and like someone else said, they don't even know what kind of car you own. Now I toy with them - when they call I say sure, I'll take the warranty, and when they ask for credit card info I say "it's in the car - can you hold on a minute while I get it?". I then set the phone down, and 5 minute slater pick it up and say "I forgot what I was doing - what am I looking for?", and so on. I just waste their time until they finally realize they're being toyed with. I know, I've got too much time on my hands!

I'm listed on both national and Colorado state "no call" lists - but still get calls. Seems charities and political calls aren't excluded and recently, I've been getting solicitor calls of all kinds. Reporting them hasn't produced any results that I can see.

For me, it seems the "no call" list is a scam of its own.

Well maybe not a "scam", just not effective enough, if you weren't on it I'd bet you'd see the difference, lol.

New "call" I got the other day was a text message from some porn or escort service. Texting might be the next wave of aggravating sales pitches.

While I was at Mom's last week, she was getting these solicitation calls one after another and would just hang up as soon as she knew what it was. I took one of the calls and listened through to the end with the intention of speaking with a live person to tell them to remove the number from their call list, these were all pre-recorded calls. When I got to the end of the first call it said push 1 to talk to an operator or push 2 to remove your number from our call list. I proceeded to eliminate at least 6 pre-recorded solicitations. You might try this on the next one you receive.

Trust me - neither 1 or 2 work - you can tell them all you want and they pay no attention and I've complained to both national and state no call lists and they are impotent - screening calls with an answering device is the only thing i've found to be effective - but we don't want to do that all the time. Near dinner time is the best time to ignore or screen calls.

Companies and organizations ignore our statements that their unsolicited calls move us to never deal with them - they ignore that too.

I just wait to get a live person then proceed pretend I called them and offer them the email scam by reading the Nigerian email in my best accent... or pretend I thought my call was dropped interrupting phone s_x... always gets me hung up on! Both are wrong on many levels - but I ALWAYS get a good laugh outta their reactions!
