MOVIES - "Get Smart"

Post by Idahoser »

I had about decided they weren't going to make any more movies I would like.

I was wrong.

This is one hilarious movie and I'm sure it's better if you liked the old series than it would be if you didn't.

Loved the TV show. Anyway, the eldest daughter took us to it for "movie night". Had me rolling.

Agreed. Great. Laughed out loud, a lot. Saw it via Netflix rental yesterday!

OK - I've got the movie sitting here and watched it once (and wasn't all that thrilled). I'll run it again before I send it back - maybe I just need a another martini. :D

It surprised me...I watched it a few days ago. Maybe I just wasn't expecting much, but I enjoyed it. Laughed out loud more than once.

Thanks. That was the one I couldn't remember... I knew there was an Arnie film, but all I could remember was the one with the kid & Movie theater... Last Action Hero or some such.

That was Arnie & Jamie Lee Curtis, Right?

Slick, "you had to be there," perhaps.

Perhaps you are too young to have watched Don Adams portraying Maxwell Smart on the television series. That is more than half the fun, like a recurring one-liner in the Seinfeld comedy - the same gag repeated over and over. For instance, Maxwell Smart would frequently do something really clutzy that caused a catastrophe, and then hold up his thumb and forefinger one inch apart, saying, "Missed it by that much!" To see this line repeated in the new movie makes us older TV watchers roar.

Or another ongoing gag - in a TV show, Maxwell Smart was on a garbage scow, with a gun to his head - in lots of trouble. He said something like, "Not so fast - at this very moment, we are surrounded by Coast Guard units and underwater Navy frogmen, just ready to spring into action at my command."

"I don't see any Coast Guard..."

"Well, would you believe, four Boy Scouts with spearguns in the next boat?"

"No, I don't believe that either."

"How about that seagull circling overhead who is just about ready to drop a load on your head?"

That "would you believe" line was echoed in the movie - again, very funny to us Get Smart veterans.

Yeah, maybe you had to be there...

FWIW, if you can't find rental copies the Series, you can usually find copies of "The Nude Bomb" ("Get Smart" Reunion Movie) available somewhere...

My sister and I saw this in the theater when it came out (myself somewhat reluctantly). I'm very familiar with the old series and I came away very impressed with the quality of the film. Very true to the original but also did not humiliate the lead characters. A good film.
