Barrel mounted peep
Anybody here use these , just swap out the rear sight on a rifle , and install a peep. Just wondering how user friendly they are.
Youtuber. Buffalo Outdoors likes his on a henry .22, just wondering the pros and cons.
On a side note,
Warren custom outdoors offer peep blades to replace a sight blade on a handgun, which looks interesting.
Might try one of those also.

I hunted lots of years with a peep sight blade on a 44 SBH. I put on a tiny rifle bead front sight and made lots and lots of meat with it. WAY easier for me than trying to fit the blade into the stock notch. The bead is the bullet, put it where you want the bullet to go. So simple it worked for simple me.

I used rear peeps on revolvers for years, but I find a white outline round or square works best for me on a revolver.
I just picked up a Skinner rear rail peep for a Ruger No1 project in 50-110. I’m working on the install, but liking it.
I can see thru it well, and you can remove the aperture for a 2X peep size.

Re: Barrel mounted peep
On a rifle? Open sight or a receiver peep or a tang sight is better…..that’s all I’ve ever used for 50 years and find the tang sight the best of them as it has the longest sight radius and it quicker to mount and fire at whatever your shooting at….
Off the bench there’s no difference if you have good eyes, concerning the barrel mounted peep vs. open sight…..have several new in the packaging and see no need for installation. I buy things for the hell of it and think them out in my head….makes no sense with the short sight radius. With a tang sight off the bench I never saw much difference between that and a scope….now that I’m semi old the scope wins out.
A peep on a revolver? I won’t even answer that one….something to do with what P.T Barnum said.——006

Re: Barrel mounted peep
I had no experience with peep sights until I went into the Air Force. I found them quite satisfactory when placed fairly close to the eye. Still, after the service I reverted to traditional iron sights on long guns. Age reared it's ugly head and I found that ghost rings on handguns were quite an aid. So I ended up putting one on a levergun. Again, it's fairly close to the eye compared to barrel mounted sights. I now have them on several long guns and like them a lot.
Personally, I thing they are better when mounted on the receiver than the barrel.

Re: Barrel mounted peep
Marbles made a couple sets, one long and one short. Had the long one with the short ramp on a Henry MiniBolt single shot bolt action .22LR until I found a suitable scope for the little bugger. Worked pretty good. Everything else I have had Williams FP receiver sights installed, most with elevation only target knobs which makes it much easier to change settings for different bullet weights and velocities.

Re: Barrel mounted peep
I have a Skinner barrel-mounted peep on my 1886 Browning carbine. Love it.
No, its not as inherently accurate as a receiver mount or tang, but it's less obtrusive and required no additional drilling/ tapping.
At the ranges I shoot that carbine, it is plenty accurate.
I highly recommend.

Re: Barrel mounted peep
.
I have one on several Rugers including my Redhawk 45 Colt.
I also use one on my Glock that also has tritium dots beside the aperture.
WAY better for my 'old eyes' than ordinary sights.
I also like the Marbles Bullseye on rifles - similar concept...

Re: Barrel mounted peep
As my eyes have aged over these past 80 years I have noticed major shifts in what iron sights work best for me. Used to be a tang sight with one of those aperture sights up front was totally wonderful. As the eyes aged that combo has become the worst for me and I am now gravitating toward barrel mounted open sights with a big wide blade front being best. And there was a time when I could shoot very well with that "peep-on-revolver" sight but now I am much better off with the standard square-notch rear, wide blade front. So I think you need to go with what works for your eyes as they are today and not worry about what works for other folks. Especially younger folks!
