I can still hit them.
But I really don’t care for hunting doves alone.

Guess I’m never really alone. God is here.
And the dog.

The dog doesn’t care for cows that much.

God is in every dog , it’s all on how you look at it.

There’s something calming to hunting doves.

Heard at least 100 shots yesterday morning on my 7-8 a.m. walk, just beyond the city limits.
Re: I can still hit them.
I pursued dove religiously from about ten years old until about thirty years old . Then I kinda quit for awhile . I’d say ten years ago I started going again sporadically and then in February of 2024 it came to a head and I went with eight other fellows to Argentina for a few days . Hopefully I’ll go back and do that again sometime !

I really like grouse hunting in the mountains, its mostly because the dogs love it so much.

Re: I can still hit them.
I dove hunted for a few years in my late 20's, but lost interest when I couldn't find a suitable way to cook them. I guess I don't really like them.

Re: I can still hit them.
Pop the breast out leaving them attached to the breastbone . Rinse pat dry season with whatever you like ( I normally use some kinda Cajun seasoning) let sit in frig a day or two . Put them on a broiler pan put a small piece bacon on top of each put in oven and broil about twenty minutes . Usually the bacons not done enough and I discard or fry it . Serve breasts with fried taters , coleslaw and some good rolls . I like that quite a lot .

I’d have to say the most funnest (is that a word?) hunting is dove hunting with a shotgun that fits you and squirrel hunting with a center fire 32-20……
A box of 12 ga. and a final tally of 4 doves makes for a fun day. Back in the day I was deadly with a Remington 1100 scoring 75% on doves and then my chest started thumping out and I bought a Belgium Browning A5 and missed 75%….

Re: I can still hit them.
As one gets older “dove shooting” changes in complexity . Back years ago I’d carry ten boxes of shells now if I was going I carry no more then two . As one gets older they don’t shoot at everything like when younger . The national average is supposedly three birds a box of shells , I shot shotguns a lot and if birds are flying and the decoys are pulling I can get my limit of 15 with less than two boxes .Sixgun wrote: ↑Wed Sep 04, 2024 2:31 pm I’d have to say the most funnest (is that a word?) hunting is dove hunting with a shotgun that fits you and squirrel hunting with a center fire 32-20……

Seems a lot folks in this section cut the two breast halves loose, lay each one in a big smear of cream cheese in half a scraped-out jalapeño, wrap in bacon and grill for dove poppers.

That’s a good way to fix them. Though I prefer doves and dumplings done in a crock pot.
