Today Was .22 Day
I spent a couple hours on the Range today and shot up 4 or 5 boxes of .22 Long Rifle ammo. Some it was Winchester, some Federal and I am not sure what the other was, having long ago been poured from its factory container into a small plastic box. No. I did not look at the headstamp .. though I do remember seeing what looked like an acorn on some of them.
But man, what fun the .22 is. At first I spent quite a bit of time shooting paper. I shot using a two-hand hold, resting my left hand on an ammo box. Distance was 20 yards. I have no clue as to what I used on the first two targets. The bottom one was Winchester bulk ammo.
I shot over 80 rounds at 10 yards, breaking pieces of broken clay pigeons that were on the bank. Most were the size of a 50 cent piece or a quarter. I shot standing, two-hand hold. It was great fun.
The gun was my old model Ruger Single Six.
I had Gary Reeder shorten the barrel to 4 5/8" and put a Super Single Six front sight on it. I can see the sight! I added an all-steel ejector rod housing from Borchardt Rifle Company.

Re: Today Was .22 Day
.22 days are always great days!
I took the day off today to extend the holiday weekend. Went up to Charlotte to meet up with Y2K, who is still working west coast hours, to do a little hole-punching therapy. The only thing better than shooting is shooting with one's son. Well, and shooting in air conditioned comfort this time of year!

Very nice. I love spending some time with my Single Six. I've been contemplating putting a Stainless grip frame on it, it sure was a lot of "fun" when I put the stainless grip frame on my Blackhawk. I could get some pictures this time though. Hmm

That's a handsome Single Six, Jim. I particularly like the "Rampant Colt" grips. Isn't the acorn headstamp RWS?

Could be Bill. I haven't looked it up. But they all went BANG no matter how old they were.Bill in Oregon wrote: ↑Sat Aug 31, 2024 7:57 am That's a handsome Single Six, Jim. I particularly like the "Rampant Colt" grips. Isn't the acorn headstamp RWS?

Pretty sure Bill is correct on the RWS/ acorn head stamp. I went through hundreds of those from my dad's stash as a kid. most of which were fired through my Stevens-Savage 71.
Very cool looking Ruger Jim!

Re: Today Was .22 Day
Every trip to the ranch starts with 50 rounds of .22 on four inch plates at 15 (moving back every time I get 50 hits) yards.
I’m only shooting my old Ruger flattgate.
Then 10 hits at 25 yards with the Dragoon.

Looks like a easy squirrel capable, pistol & you Jim! I got my CZ 452 American out few weeks back and checked it. With RWS Subsonic HP at 40yds I made the upper 1/4 of a 1" dot disappear like a slice of pie in 10 shots. It'll do about same with Winchester PP's. Took it squirrel hunting on opening weekend couple weeks ago, killed 3. I missed 2, but 1 those was I know a deflected bullet, shooting thru leaves, could only see his rump and tail. Hard to get a clear shot up in the hickories with the leaves full. Had barbecue squirrel wings few days later!

Re: Today Was .22 Day
Ordered a taller Lyman globe front sight for the old Winchester Model 75 yesterday, so I can have a rifle to shoot with the Super Wrangler, which I still haven't really wrung out yet.
Re: Today Was .22 Day
When I am hitting on all cylinder I take the Ruger Automatic with me and shoot it first. If I can settle in enough to group with it I move to the others, otherwise i'm just wasting ammo.Scott Tschirhart wrote: ↑Sat Aug 31, 2024 10:17 am Every trip to the ranch starts with 50 rounds of .22 on four inch plates at 15 (moving back every time I get 50 hits) yards.

Your flat gate is special
Re: Today Was .22 Day
I did the same thing yesterday and you are right! 22's are a bunch of fun!
Nice shooting and I like your single six!
I should have brought out my Ruger single six hunter, but I only used 2 rifles.
Remington 511 from 1947 and a 518 from 1968, and because my eyes are not what they used to be....
I put a couple of inexpensive scopes on them. CVLife 3 x 9 x 40 with parallax on the front objective, set at 50 yards.
They are ok...I wanted to put some vintage scopes on them, but they are a lot of $$$ down here. Anyway...
It was a ton of fun siting them in. I used Remington 22 Thunderbolt ammo, and they were pretty good! Towards the end I started shooting little sticks and rock. what a blast!
