Browning 92 44 mag.....I did

Post by TedH »

Local shop has a Browning 92 44 mag on the shelf. It's not been really well cared for. Stock has a few dings and scratches. Barrel has a couple small rust spots that look like it may clean up somewhat. Definitely not a safe queen, it's been used and slightly abused. What got my attention was the price. It was originally tagged at $995, but was marked down to $600. I was only there to take delivery of a 44 Special I bought online, or I would have probably just taken it today. Told him I'll think about the Browning and see if he still has it next week.

Edit to today. I called first thing this morning as soon as they opened and told him I would come in later and to set it back for me. I was able to get him to eat the tax, and got it for $600 out the door.
It's definitely seen some use, but nothing too serious. More importantly the bore is shiny and bright.

I see you skipped ahead to the responses you'll receive. Of COURSE you should! What kind of enablers would we be if we didn't encourage you?

At $600 doubtful that will last , that's what they sold for 25 plus years ago.

That's the condition I like to find them in so I don't have to worry about putting the first ding in it, and as already noted that's the 20 years ago price.

I grabbed a 9422M in similar condition during the pandemic for $400. Makes for a good field gun vs a safe queen and I can still smile about the price.

Put that sucker on layaway today! I've learned to never walk away from a great deal like that because it'll be gone by the time I make up my mind.

I passed on a $600 one around 2005 and regretted it. Lever action prices have gone way up across the board since then. You don’t see B92s for sale that often. Well made, no added safeties, it probably a great buy assuming there are no mechanical problems

To echo what others have already stated, I think it would be an excellent buy. I picked up a slick Browning Centennial model 92 about 3 years ago and paid substantially more than $600.

As someone who didn’t get a 1895 .405wcf for $2kaud (1500usd at the time) about 4 years ago (with factory express sites and in good condition)…don’t pass it up. I still think of this rifle weekly.

Buy buy.

If it doesnt take away from another responsibility or cause any harm to your short term finances (basically if you dont have to defer a bill or home maintenance ) --- go for it

Its not really an investment any more than a savings account is an investment but at $600 and with the popularity of leverguns now -- youre not going to lose money and can enjoy it far more than a 2% IRA

I bought one like you described about 20 years ago. I swapped an SKS for it. Man, did I make out! That thing shoots like a ring tailed terror. I know a couple guys with them also, and they said theirs shoot well too. That's what really matters.

Well done. That’s a bargain.

They’re a decent copy of the original. The 44’s are fitted with a barrel that has shallow multi groove rifling, somewhat like a Marlin microgroove barrel. They shoot jacketed fine and can also shoot cast well too. Just load your cast bullets as you would for a Marlin microgroove barrel.

Excellent Ted, that's a keeper and next best thing to original 1892.

I was expecting rougher than that from your initial description -- looks great !

I sold a couple of Trapper length .44's about a decade ago - one a '94 Winchester with a synthetic stock , and the other a Marlin 1894

I got weird and decided i was done with anything under .45 caliber and just kept my .45 Colt Trapper -- i do stuff like that sometimes - but in hindsight, wish i hadn't :o

I certainly wouldn't be unhappy with the condition. But I like a gun that has a few dings.
