Yep, you know what they say, “make hay while the sun shines”…….something city folk don’t understand……..Hays going to bring big money around here this fall…….we most always have 3 cuttings with the second being the cream of the crop, so to speak……….we had a wicked wet spring and then the rain just stopped…….we will get our 3 ….hopefully…..sometimes the rain is spread out and we’ll get 4.

If it gets rained on after being cut the mushroom growers get it, mold and all.

How many cuttings do you guys get? ——-006

I lost a good friend a couple of weeks ago while he was cutting hay for a friend... mowing the edges of a tank and the bank collapsed, turning the tractor over into the tank, pinning him underwater... I avoid the edges of my tank at all costs... a word to the wise that caution in necessary, and it only takes a moments distraction...

Son lived in hay growing country going to UT Tyler. They called it coastal grass, is that the same thing as around here?

Just baled 400 small squares today. That's the end of first crop. It has been raining every other day since the first of June. It has been a royal pain trying to get haying done.

We are about a month behind because of the rain, normally we would be through with the first cutting by the middle of June and then get a second cutting in August. We seldom sell it mostly feed our own cattle... John

Yes, it's a hybrid Bermuda, there are several strains, "coastal" being the most common.... John

You got that right! Ouachita River runs through the center of the farm and we have what we call "high-banks" in places where erosion has taken the trees and it's 25' to 30' straight down to the river and we respect those sand banks!... John
