I bought it cheap because it was out of time.

The pawl was too short.

I had a good friend accidentally shoot him self with a Virginian Dragoon. The bullet went under his collar bone and punched a hole through his scapula. The gun fell out of his waistband as he crossed a fence. It could have easily killed him.

Keith recommended to Bill Ruger to call the Super Blackhawk a “Dragoon” and I still think that would have been fitting.

That's why the two dots on the Virginian cylinder remind you to keep an empty chamber under the hammer.

I've always thought of mine as a Dragoon. With the square-back trigger guard, it just shouts "Dragoon"!

Is the brass frame original? At the time another company was making them aftermarket for Rugers but you can tell from the markings inside. If original, they are worth double what a regular one is. I had a brass framed 357 and an Old Army but they both went down the road.

This one has a factory brass frame. I have an aftermarket brass frame on another Ruger.

I don’t know anything about the value being increased as it certainly wasn’t in this case.

Fitting the new pawl requires a great deal of trial and error.

That should be “file and error”

I have it set to just go into the full cock notch on each chamber. Then I coated the pawl with some black paint and I’ll cycle the action a few hundred times to see where I need to polish it for a final fit.

It’s not a bad project if you remember that the notches on the pawl serve different functions and you take your time.

While I was fitting the pawl, I noticed that the rachet is not perfectly consistent. Two chambers would lock up before the sear dropped into the full cock notch while each of the other chambers would allow the sear to lock in as the sear dropped into the full cock notch.

Now they all lock up when they should and the action feels really good.

No, I didn’t video it. And I’ve never seen a video of anyone else doing it. I’ve never talked about how to do it with anyone. But this is not a terribly complex machine and I had the old pawl to go by.

I used a flat needle file and took my time.

It isn’t a terribly complicated machine compared to a watch or a truck.

By 1973 Ruger seems to have worked out all the kinks.

I tried six different loads this morning and it shot quite well with each. However there were two that stood out.

Skeeter’s .44 Special load averaged 924 fps

Skeeter’s .44 Magnum load (255 gr Keith over 21 gr 2400) averaged 1443 FPS.

I was looking at a three screw .45 Colt that was almost new in the box on Saturday. The lady was selling some of her dad's stuff, and I gave it some serious consideration, but decided to pass. Too much going on in my world lately.

Fortunately it shoots a light load of 6 gr of Unique and a machine cast 240 pretty well.

I always admired that Ruger "factory" holster and had one once upon a time. I thought it was perfect for a hunting rig to be worn on the belt -- so much protection for the sixgun.

It’s perfect for horseback or for riding a motorcycle or quad.

Not so good for anything with a bench seat!!

I second that sentiment . At a crossroads in my career and have been evaluating every cent that comes out of my pocket it seems. (Thinking of going the PA route but nervous as I would have to surrender my standard property/casualty license , which has been my livelihood for almost 25 years)

About two years ago or so, a PA in my area wanted me to come work for him. I wasn't really looking, but the Independent Adj. co. I was working for was getting tiresome and I was spending a fortune driving all over northern OH in a V8 Ford. I liked the company that offered me the PA position, but I just wasn't into the sales aspect of the job. It was a good buck, but I turned them down.
I sent out a couple of resumes, just for kicks and the claims manager at Erie actually picked up the phone and called that day. All the other companies was all online BS. Fill out this, fill out that.
I've been with Erie ins. since.

It's a crazy world. I wish you the best on whatever decision you make!
