really off off topic question for musicians

Post by Grizz »

I have a 4 string bass and I bought some stick-on note stickers for cheating the fret board.

the question is, would rubbing alcohol be suitable cleaner that won't adversely affect the wood?

or, is there a better way to clean it?

prior to applying the note decals.

so i can quit guessing .

thanks in advance

Naphtha (lighter fluid) is absolutely your best bet for cleaning the surface; this, from a guy who builds guitars and collects 5+ figure (not finger) guitars.

Ray wrote: Fri May 31, 2024 3:54 pm Reminds of the time I made-up an "alto" guitar for the purpose of learning the notes of a bass. I took a cheap four-string "tenor" and strung it with the low end guitar strings, e-a-d-g. This gave me the same notes on the fretboard of a bass but higher octave. I succeed in learning the notes somewhat but never could keep time well enough to assist in the little church choir/band.

Playing the little "alto" was a joy apart from using it to learn bass notes. The challenge of learning those notes as well as learning to play the "alto" by inverting mandolin chords g-d-a-e to e-a-d-g (just flipping them upside-down) was most entertaining. The downside was the necessity of slacking the strings between sessions as the string tension of the much fatter than normal "tenor" strings was too much for the thin/skinny neck.

Even using inverted mandolin chords, some fingerings just didn't sound right. The normal d maj. was of a lower pitch than the regular g & c where as on a conventionally tuned guitar it is higher and so forth.

If I get a chance and can find the audio I'll try to upload a sample of the improvised "obama-engineered" "alto" guitar sound.

Found this.....https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=B4Pl2DCGa ... e=youtu.be

Kind of slappy/plunky with less than optimal string tension but on-key per the digital tuner. Please pardon the deviated septum nasally dissonance.

And this..... https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=f-ECzUuns5A which proves I should have done "the lighthouse" above in d instead of g so as not to sound like ernie ford trying to reach down deep and imitate paul robeson.....
good songs Ray. I can't sing. Literally. I can't hear the pitch of my voice, and I can't tune a guitar to itself and I can't harmonize my voice with anything. If it weren't for the clip-on truth detector I would quit trying. I can hear simple stuff like a 1-4-5 chord progression, but that's the only one. I can't tell what key any music is being played in. And I can't tell when a note is not in the scale of a tune. It's the vacuum of outer space between those two gray cells. But something about what music is gets me started again.

Thanks Ray. I am going to make some progress, just so no one hears me. I hope I don't lead the heavenly hosts off-key when I am transitioned. :)
